Saturation point

satpoint

Saturation point…

Might I add another variation of the definition?

  • the stage beyond which no more book content can be absorbed by the reader’s brain.

Which pretty accurately describes my current state of being, which can also be described thusly:

brain-full

For the past few years, I’ve been able to successfully juggle multiple books at once — a book for fun, a book for book group, an audiobook for while I drive. I never thought I’d reach the point where my brain feels maxed out, but now I know:

My magic number is: five

Yup, I think I’ve reached my reading saturation point — the point at which my brain will not accept a single additional plot line, character, theme, or main idea. And symbolism? Foreshadowing? Don’t make me laugh.

I haven’t had quite this problem before. I usually do have several books on the go — typically, a big huge book from the Outlander series as part of my group read with Outlander Book Club; a classic read, also with the book club; whatever book I happen to be reading just for me (just for fun), and an audiobook for while I’m driving or exercising.

So why do I suddenly feel maxed out at 5?

Consider this: Of my five current books, 4 — yes, four — are brand-new to me.

The Outlander book (Written in My Own Heart’s Blood) is a re-read, and although we’re reading and analyzing two chapters per week, it’s not taking up a huge amount of grey matter. I already know what happens. It’s not that I don’t have to think about it, but it’s still not taking in new concepts and information.

Then there’s the group classic read. Our last group classic was Emma by Jane Austen, which was oodles of fun — but which I’d read several times before. It was a blast reading it with the group, but again, it was a re-read for me. Hey, if you know any neurologists, can you ask them if re-reading a book uses different parts of the brain than reading a book for the first time? I’m no brain doctor, but I’m betting the answer is yes.

brain-girl

Our current classic read is A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway… and it’s completely new to me. I know nothing about the plot or characters, and I’m definitely having to put more effort into learning what’s what, getting the rhythm of the writing style, and understanding the shades and nuances of the story.

Then there’s the audiobook. I do a lot of re-reads via audiobook. I find that my mind is often slippery when it comes to listening to books, especially while I’m driving. If there’s bad traffic or I get stuck looking for parking in a crowded neighborhood, I can’t concentrate at all on what I’m listening to. But if I’m listening to the audio version of a book I’ve already read, I can relax, not worry too much about hearing every detail, and just enjoy revisiting something that I loved already the first time around.

At this moment, however, I’m listening to a new-to-me audiobook, The Android’s Dream by John Scalzi. Granted, this is a pretty silly and light-hearted science fiction novel, but even so, I find myself getting caught up in the story… and even when I get out of the car or remove the earbuds from my ears, my brain does not want to disengage.

Plus, there’s my book book — whatever I’m reading right now, either via physical or e-book — my normal, everyday, just because I feel like it book. Basically, my daily reading fix.

And finally, I’m now tackling Moby Dick via the Serial Reader app, and I think it’s this one that’s pushing me over the edge. Don’t get me wrong — I’m really loving Moby Dick! And I love the serial approach to reading such a huge book, getting manageable bites delivered each day.

The problem, I think, with my current reading, is that with 4 of my 5 reading commitments being completely new material, my engagement is getting split in way too many directions. I read a bit of Moby Dick, and I want to know more… but then I turn on the car and start listening to The Android’s Dream, and I can’t get the action sequences out of my head. When I have a few minutes of down time, I pick up my current novel (right now, The Magician King by Lev Grossman) and get totally into it… but then in the evening, I read the next day’s chapter of A Farewell To Arms and want more of that too.

brain4So…

Saturation point.

I think I’m there.

Five plotlines and sets of characters may finally represent my breaking point… my saturation point… the point beyond which I absolutely cannot absorb one more detail or shred of story.

Not that I’m willing to drop any of my five reading projects. But man, my head feels full to bursting sometimes.

Remind me to STOP THE MADNESS next time I need to choose an audiobook or rethink my reading commitments. Maybe it’s time to scale back on the amount of new fiction I’m trying to cram into my brain.

Meanwhile…

cooltext1850356879 My Monday tradition, including a look back and a look ahead — what I read last week, what new books came my way, and what books are keeping me busy right now. Plus a smattering of other stuff too.

What did I read last week?

Leave MeLight Between Oceans

Leave Me by Gayle Forman: Done! My review is here.

The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman: I’m so glad that I finally read this book! It’s sad and haunting, and utterly gorgeous. Now I need to see the movie!

In audiobooks:

HP4

I finished listening to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire… and loved it as much as always.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

I also listened to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which was wonderful. I’d never read the story before, and I’ve never seen the movie (must fix ASAP!), but I really enjoyed this audiobook listen, and thought Michael C. Hall’s narration was terrific.

Pop culture goodness:

Anyone else watching Killjoys?

killjoys-horizontal2-700x400

The season finale this week was awesome! I’m so glad it’s been renewed for season 3.

And… I finally took in a spot of culture — a night at the theater! My husband and I went to see this, and loved it:

beautiful-san-francisco-1-6259202-regular

Fresh Catch:

I went to what I thought was going to be a book event with a reading, Q&A, etc, but was really mostly a photo and book signing opp. Still, I walked away with a signed copy of Ransom Riggs’s new book, plus some cool swag, so it was worth it in the end.

What will I be reading during the coming week?

Currently in my hands:
 Dark Matter

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch: Verdict after 50 pages? This is going to be GOOD.

Now playing via audiobook:

Android's Dream

Time for a sci-fi treat! I’ve just started the audiobook version of The Android’s Dream by John Scalzi, narrated by Wil Wheaton. This should be good, silly fun.

Ongoing reads:

MOBYFarewell to Arms 2Moby Dick

Written in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon: My book group is reading and discussing two chapters per week, and we’re at about chapter 68 right now (which is maybe 40%?).

A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway: My book group’s classic read, again at a rate of two chapters per week.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville: I’ve just started reading this with the Serial Reader app (read about it here), and I’ve read five installments so far. Wish me luck!

Now playing via audiobook:

I’m loving the Goblet of Fire audiobookIt’s startling, after all these years of reading Harry Potter books, to realize that my memory of the books is definitely affected by having seen the movies so many times. There are things that I could swear are lines from the books… except they’re not — they’re lines from the movies instead. Confusing! But so much fun to revisit these books, over and over and over again. I have about four hours worth of listening to go, so I should be finished up by the end of this week.

Where does the time go? I feel like I’ve been barely able to read for the past week, and when I do finally crawl into bed with a book at the end of the day, I just can’t keep my eyes open as long as I’d like.

I did go on an amazing white-water rafting trip last weekend. We got some great pictures — which one of my family members kindly updated to include a few folks who couldn’t actually be with us (and to add even more excitement than a mere class IV rapid):

The Monday Check-In ~ 8/15/2016

cooltext1850356879 My Monday tradition, including a look back and a look ahead — what I read last week, what new books came my way, and what books are keeping me busy right now. Plus a smattering of other stuff too.

In real life:

Yesterday, my baby turned 14, and today he starts high school. I may have a tear or two in my eyes, but he’s totally ready to get on with it (and tells me to stop being such a dork about it all).

What did I read last week?

I was away again for a week, so I had lot of time to curl up with good books! I haven’t written a book review in ages, but here’s what I’ve read recently:

20Bad BloodBag of Bones

The AccidentBefore the Fall

Bad Blood by Dana Stabenow: The 20th book in the Kate Shugak series is also the last one published… and now I’m done! Bad Blood ends with a major cliffhanger — so unfair! So now we readers have to just sit and wait until whenever #21 is published, which leaves me feeling like:

pout

Also read:

Bag of Bones by Stephen King: Loved it. It’s a longer book, and was perfect beach reading. Creepy, spooky, touching, scary — lots of trademark King, and call me crazy, but his books always seem to work perfectly for me as vacation reading.

The Accident by Chris Pavone: A super engrossing and entertaining spy thriller, with lots of twists and surprises. This is the third book I’ve read by this author, and they’ve all been terrific!

Last but not least, I read Before the Fall by Noah Hawley, which maybe wasn’t the best choice right before getting on a plane… but was a damned good book about a plane crash and its aftermath. Review to follow, once I catch my breath.

Pop Culture Goodness:

I stayed up until midnight and waited through online queues to buy tickets to…

HP8 banner

Much jumping for joy!!! I don’t have the travel details at all worked out yet, but my daughter and I will be heading to London next June to see Harry Potter!

Fresh Catch:

All sorts of new books this week. First, my book group did a book/gift exchange, and here’s what I received (lucky me!)

image

Plus, a whole bunch of library holds came in at once:

What will I be reading during the coming week?

Currently in my hands:
 Memory WallCircling the Sun

The Memory Wall by Lev AC Rosen: The upcoming new release from a can’t-miss author! Stay tuned for a blog feature about The Memory Wall!

Circling the Sun by Paula McLain: I won this in a Goodreads giveaway this spring, and I’m finally settling down to read it. I’ve heard such good things!

Now playing via audiobook:

HP4

I still have quite a ways to go, but I’m whole-heartedly enjoying the Goblet of Fire audiobook.

Ongoing reads:

MOBYFarewell to Arms 2

What did I read last week?

First and foremost, this:

HP8 banner

Loved it! My reaction post is here.

I also read:

19Restless in the Grave

Restless in the Grave by Dana Stabenow: Continuing with my Kate Shugak obsession, I read book #19 in the series. One more to go, and I’ll be all caught up!

In audiobooks…

Agent to the Stars

Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi: I finished listening to this hilarious sci-fi audiobook, and loved it! Check out my review here.

Pop Culture Goodness:

My book group finished our months-long read of Emma earlier in July, and we’ve all been watching movie adaptations. During the past week, I watched both of these:

The 1996 movie version starring Gwyneth Paltrow

The 1996 movie version starring Gwyneth Paltrow

The 2009 BBC mini-series starring Romola Garai

The 2009 BBC mini-series starring Romola Garai

Both were quite good, although with very different portrayals of Emma and the rest of the characters.

Fresh Catch:

A few new books last week — a graphic novel, my book group’s next classic read, and a book I plan to take with me when I travel this week — so glad it arrived in time!

Buffy s10v5Farewell to Arms 2Truly Madly Guilty

And best of all, in case I didn’t make it perfectly clear already:

IMG_3774

SO. FRICKIN’. FANTASTIC.

What will I be reading during the coming week?

Currently in my hands:
 20Bad Blood

Bad Blood by Dana Stabenow: The last published Kate Shugak novel (#20), although I understand that #21 is in the works. I guess I’ll have to find a new series to obsess over!

I have another trip coming up this week, and so far my traveling book companions are likely to be:

Truly Madly GuiltyBag of Bones

… and whatever delights are hidden on my Kindle!

Now playing via audiobook:

HP4

Entirely coincidentally, I’ve gone back to the Harry Potter audiobooks! Just started Goblet of Fire, and it’ll probably take me a few weeks to get through it. And I’ll love every moment, I’m sure. (I’m on a Harry Potter high at the moment — can you tell?)

Audiobook Review: Agent To The Stars by John Scalzi

Agent to the Stars

The space-faring Yherajk have come to Earth to meet us and to begin humanity’s first interstellar friendship. There’s just one problem: They’re hideously ugly and they smell like rotting fish. So getting humanity’s trust is a challenge. The Yherajk need someone who can help them close the deal. Enter Thomas Stein, who knows something about closing deals. He’s one of Hollywood’s hottest young agents. But although Stein may have just concluded the biggest deal of his career, it’s quite another thing to negotiate for an entire alien race. To earn his percentage this time, he’s going to need all the smarts, skills, and wits he can muster.

Agent to the Stars is John Scalzi’s first novel, but you’d never know it. It’s hilarious. And wonderful. And just so perfectly entertaining.

A heavy-duty reflection on the nature of humanity… is not what this is. Instead, it’s a fast-paced, in-your-face, silly look at the world of Hollywood, the art of the deal… and aliens.

In this case, very smelly aliens. The Yherajk communicate via smell, so attending one of their senior officers meetings onboard their space ship is likely to make a human vomit or pass out. And yet, they’re a peaceful race with advanced intelligence and technology, and they just want to get to know us.

Agent 2Tom Stein is placed in the once-in-a-lifetime position of being the man chosen to introduce an entire race to humanity. As a Hollywood agent, Tom is an expert when it comes to making something attractive, garnering attention, and making people want more. But how to package and promote a species that looks like blobs of goo? With Yherajk representative Joshua designated as Tom’s personal liaison, things go from weird to unbelieavably weird in a flash, and meanwhile, Tom is still trying to place his of-the-moment hot actress into the dramatic role of a lifetime.

To say any more would be to ruin the fun. In case I haven’t made it perfectly clear, this is not at all a serious book. As an audiobook, it suited my needs to a T. Light and breezy, it’s a perfect listen for when you don’t need to engage a lot of brain cells. I can definitely attest to the fact that this audiobook made for a great couple of weeks of commuting.

Narrator Wil Wheaton takes the crazy imagination of John Scalzi and turns it into a wild and hilarious performance that’s silly and light, and yet with some surprisingly touching moments too. Such fun. If your sense of humor runs toward goofy and you enjoy wholly unusual sci-fi plots (with smelly aliens), don’t miss this book!

I’m back! I had a wonderful time away. Isn’t vacation a great concept? I’m hoping this cheery, relaxed feeling will last me longer than my first day back at work.

What did I read last week?

Well, first of all, check out what I read on vacation! I wrote a wrap-up post, here.

Vacation Collage

Since getting home, I’ve also read:

Liam3Liam4

Nothing Gold Can Stay and Better to Rest by Dana Stabenow: I’m on a roll with the Liam Campbell mysteries, and just couldn’t stop until I finished #3 and #4! Nothing Gold Can Stay was particularly good, but really, I’ve loved them all.

Emma by Jane Austen: Done! My book group’s group read of Emma ended this week, and it was sensational! I’ve read Emma a couple of times before, but this time around, we read and discussed two chapters per week, and it was a blast. Here’s a shout-out to my book group peeps, who are a fun, insightful, smart group of readers!

cooltext1850356879 My Monday tradition, including a look back and a look ahead — what I read last week, what new books came my way, and what books are keeping me busy right now. Plus a smattering of other stuff too.

In real life:

It’s been an insanely busy week at work, and at home, I’ve been busy getting my kiddo ready for three weeks of sleepaway camp. Laundry, ironing on name tags, packing… it’s the annual ritual, lots of fun, but always with last-minute frenzy, no matter how well prepared we are. Still, as of yesterday, the kid is on his way, and pretty soon, I’ll be leaving on a trip of my own.

He and I did manage to finish our big huge Buffy watch this week (a re-watch for me, first time for him), and it was amazing! I’ll never get tired of Buffy, and it was so much fun to introduce another of my kids to one of my favorite geeky pleasures.

Meanwhile, back to the books…

What did I read last week?

17A Night Too Dark18Though Not DeadRainwater

A Night Too Dark by Dana Stabenow: Kate Shugak, #17. Yes, I’m obsessed.

Though Not Dead by Dana Stabenow: The 18th Kate Shugak book was amazing! I’m always impressed when an author can keep a series going for so long and still present fresh and exciting storylines and great character development. Man, do I love this series.

Rainwater by Sandra Brown: I’ve never read a Sandra Brown book before — I associate her with the romance genre, which I usually avoid. Rainwater was a book group pick and I felt compelled to read it… and ended up enjoying it! I’ll write up my thoughts to share in the next few days.

Alison WonderlandAnd a DNF — I started a book that I’d featured as a Shelf Control pick recently (Alison Wonderland), and realized that it just did not appeal to me at all. I gave it 20 pages, then added it to the book swap shelf at work. Maybe someone else will enjoy it…

Excuse me while I wipe away the tears still running down my face…

Season 2 came to an end this weekend with a powerful season finale episode. Unfortunately, what with all of my real life craziness, I wasn’t able to watch the finale until late Sunday… so no reaction post just yet. But wow – what a great wrap-up to an amazing, heartbreaking season.

Fresh Catch:

Well, yes, I did get some new books this week. So much good stuff!

Two older Stephen Kings books, one new-in-paperback novel that looks great…

… and two graphic novels that I’m really excited about:

I’m about to leave on vacation, and have been working hard on whittling down my stack of vacation reading! Here’s what I’m pretty sure I’m going to start with… and yes, about 4 more books plus my Kindle are all coming along with me on my travels.

Now playing via audiobook:

This audiobook is awesome! It’s narrated by Wil Wheaton, and it’s making me laugh pretty much nonstop, which I really needed this week! Unfortunately, I think I’ll have to leave it on pause for a couple of weeks while I’m traveling, but I’ll be looking forward to picking it back up ASAP.

My book group is reading and discussing two chapter per week of both Written in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon and Emma by Jane Austen. This is an online group, and anyone is welcome to join us — so if you’re interested, just ask me how!
