The Monday Agenda 6/30/2014

MondayAgendaNot a lofty, ambitious to-be-read list consisting of 100+ book titles. Just a simple plan for the upcoming week — what I’m reading now, what I plan to read next, and what I’m hoping to squeeze in among the nooks and crannies.

Diana Gabaldon. Me. A signed first edition of Written in My Own Heart’s Blood. Happiness!

I went to Phoenix for a day! I missed Diana Gabaldon when she came to my town earlier this month, so I flew to Phoenix (may the gods bless the inventor of airline mileage!) to catch her appearance there. And it was awesome. I’ll write more about it sometime soon, I swear!

How did I do with last week’s agenda?

Goodnight JuneOne Plus One

Goodnight June by Sarah Jio: Done! My review is here.

One Plus One by Jojo Moyes: Done! My review is here.

Fresh Catch:

A couple of library books and a couple of review books came my way this week:

Skin Game (The Dresden Files, #15)Trains and LoversPrototype (Archetype #2)World of Trouble (The Last Policeman, #3)

Elsewhere on the blog:

Following up on my Give Me Liberty post… I’m enjoying my less-pressure approach to blogging! I notice that my stats are a bit lower, but that’s okay. Less stress = more happiness!

What’s on my reading agenda for the coming week?

Skin Game (The Dresden Files, #15)Mr. MercedesClose Your Eyes, Hold Hands

Skin Game by Jim Butcher. Welcome back, Harry Dresden!

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King

If by some miracle I have time to start a 3rd book, it’ll be Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands by Chris Bohjalian.

Across the Great Barrier (Frontier Magic, #2)And in the world of reading with my kiddo, we’re enjoying Across the Great Barrier by Patricia C. Wrede.

So many book, so little time…

The Monday Agenda 6/23/2014

MondayAgendaNot a lofty, ambitious to-be-read list consisting of 100+ book titles. Just a simple plan for the upcoming week — what I’m reading now, what I plan to read next, and what I’m hoping to squeeze in among the nooks and crannies.

Life:

I’m back! I had a wonderful few weeks on vacation with my family… and kinda appreciate my forced break from blogging, to be honest. Not that I’m not ready to dive back in — but it was nice not to have deadlines or commitments to think about. I relaxed, I hung out with the kiddo and the rest of the gang, and I read whatever I felt like reading, whenever I felt like it. Now that’s a vacation!

Thank you to my friendly readers who stuck with me while I was away! Now that I’m back, I’ll be picking up where I left off…

How did I do with my vacation reading agenda?

Here’s what I read while I was away:

The Girl with All the GiftsEmpire GirlsRebecca

13th childThe Haunting of Hill House

The Girl With All The Gifts by M. R. Carey: My review is here.

Empire Girls by Suzanne Hayes and Loretta Nyhan: My review is here.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: I’m so glad I decided to re-read Rebecca, about 20 or so years since I first read it! Amazing how little I actually remembered about the plot… I’ll be featuring Rebecca in an upcoming Flashback Friday post, so stay tuned!

Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede: My son and I finished this one during our trip, and despite a few hesitations (mostly on my part), enjoyed it enough to want to read more of the series. My thoughts on this book are here.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson: I’ve had this book on my shelf for ages, and finally read it… and felt kind of meh about it. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood to appreciate it or my timing was just off. While I recognize the artistry of the writing, it just wasn’t scary. Maybe I’ve become too jaded by more modern horror novels? I’m glad I read it, but I didn’t come away from it feeling like I’d read a masterpiece.

Finally, the centerpiece of my vacation reading:

March 2014

I had to balance spending time with family with my need to obsessively read Written in My Own Heart’s Blood every possible second. Maybe not the best course of action during a family vacation, but after waiting for this book for years, there was simply no way I wasn’t going to read it as soon as the download arrived on my Kindle. Short review? Loved it. I’m sure I’ll be writing more about this book in the coming week or two. Bottom line: If you’re an Outlander fan, you’ll love every moment.

Fresh Catch:

I may have been away from home, but that doesn’t mean that the new books stopped coming! A few of my preorders and other books arrived while I was away:

Mr. MercedesFairest, Vol. 3: The Return of the Maharaja (Fairest, #3)The Undertaking of Lily ChenRivers of London (Peter Grant, #1)

Also this week, I treated myself to this:

That would be Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon, in Hebrew, faithfully guarded by Pocket Jamie.

Elsewhere on the blog:

I wrote a mini-manifesto (“Give Me Liberty!”) on my need to read whatever I feel like and cut back on obligations. Check it out here.

What’s on my reading agenda for the coming week?

I’m having a bit of a book hangover after finishing Written In My Own Heart’s Blood, and I’m seriously tempted to just start it again from the beginning. Still, there’s so much else to read, and here’s what’s next on my agenda:

Goodnight JuneOne Plus OneMr. Mercedes

Goodnight June by Sarah Jio: I’ve read about a third so far. Gotta love a book set at a bookstore!

One Plus One by Jojo Moyes

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King

Across the Great Barrier (Frontier Magic, #2)And in the world of reading with my kiddo, we’ve just begun book 2 in Patricia C. Wrede’s Frontier Magic series, Across the Great Barrier.

So many book, so little time…

The Monday Agenda 6/2/2014… and beyond!

MondayAgendaNot a lofty, ambitious to-be-read list consisting of 100+ book titles. Just a simple plan for the upcoming week — what I’m reading now, what I plan to read next, and what I’m hoping to squeeze in among the nooks and crannies.

Life:

By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be on an airplane, heading out for a few weeks of family travel — featuring sun, sand, relatives, lots of food, a Rolling Stones concert, probably a water park or two, and (fingers crossed) oodles of reading time, if I can find a quiet nook to hide out in by myself!

While I’m away, never fear! My weekly features, Thursday Quotables and Flashback Friday, are already all queued up and read to go… so there will be no interruption in our regularly scheduled programming. I hope to pop in with updates and reviews while I’m away — but I’m not sure yet how much faith I have in the promise of wi-fi throughout our trip. So, nice readers, in case I don’t see you sooner, have a great couple of weeks filled with awesome reading, and I’ll catch you when I’m back.

Meanwhile, for this week’s Monday Agenda updates, read on!

How did I do with last week’s agenda?

TroubleJust One Night (Just One Day, #2.5)echo

Trouble by Non Pratt: Done! My review is here.

Just One Night by Gayle Forman: This newly released novella is a follow up to Just One Day and Just One Year — and if you’ve read those, then you have to go download this short-but-sweet tale, pronto! If you’re one of the many, many readers who finished Just One Year and were dying to know what happened NEXT… well, here’s your answer. I thought Just One Night was sweet, romantic, and satisfying… and now I DO know what happened after that kiss…

In Outlander world… I finished (finally) my re-read of An Echo in the Bone! I’ve had a complete blast re-reading this book with the Outlander Book Club (who, by the way, are the best bunch of booklovers and all-around great people!) And now, I wait. What am I waiting for? See below!

But first, a look at what I’m still in the middle of reading:

The Girl with All the Gifts13th child

I’d hoped to finish The Girl With All The Gifts this week, but laundry and packing have overwhelmed me, so I’m only at 50%. Into the carry-on it goes; should make for interesting airplane reading!

The kiddo and I are getting closer to the end of Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede. It’s a good one. We’ll be finishing this book in the next few days, and I’m packing the sequel!

Fresh Catch:

Self-restraint was the catch-phrase of the week! Mainly because I was busy packing, but still… absolutely no new books this week!

Elsewhere on the blog:

I shared my thoughts about the end of the TV season in May and which shows really ended with a bang. You can read about it here.

What’s on my reading agenda for the coming week?

What to read on vacation? Well, assuming my wi-fi works and my Kindle downloads happen on schedule, the #1 book I’ll be reading as of June 10th is:

March 2014

June 10th!!!

But before then, I still have a week and a very long plane ride to fill, so here’s a selection of what I’m thinking of reading:

BittersweetEmpire GirlsRebeccaThe FeverThe Witch of Blackbird PondThe Traitor's Wife: The Woman Behind Benedict Arnold and the Plan to Betray America

Not to imply that I’ll read this many books! But these are the main ones I’m considering… and the beauty of having a Kindle is not having to decide ahead of time!

Still, if you want to find me from June 10th onward, there’s a good chance I’ll be hiding in a corner somewhere with Written In My Own Heart’s Blood!

Thursday Quotables: The Fiery Cross

quotation-marks4

Welcome back to Thursday Quotables! This weekly feature is the place to highlight a great quote, line, or passage discovered during your reading each week.  Whether it’s something funny, startling, gut-wrenching, or just really beautifully written, Thursday Quotables is where my favorite lines of the week will be, and you’re invited to join in!

tfc quote

The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon
(first published 2001)

I’m in the midst of a major fit of Outlander obsession, just finishing a super-speedy re-read of The Fiery Cross (book #5 in the series). There are so many quotable moments, especially when it comes to Jamie and Claire. This one is just perfect, I think, and always makes me sigh.

PS – I loved this passage so much, I just had to decorate it! My graphic design abilities are pretty limited, but I do like the way this one came out!

What lines made you laugh, cry, or gasp this week? Do tell!

If you’d like to participate in Thursday Quotables, it’s really simple:

  • Write a Thursday Quotables post on your blog. Try to pick something from whatever you’re reading now. And please be sure to include a link back to Bookshelf Fantasies in your post (http://www.bookshelffantasies.com), if you’d be so kind!
  • Leave your link in the comments — or, if you have a quote to share but not a blog post, you can leave your quote in the comments too!
  • Visit other linked blogs to view their Thursday Quotables, and have fun!

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon
(first published 1992)

I’m just finishing a re-read of Dragonfly in Amber (book #2 in the Outlander series) via audiobook, and so many new and different parts jumped out at me this time. I don’t think I ever really paid attention to the quote above in my previous readings, but this time, it struck me as so simple and romantic… that I got inspired, played around with images and text, and made myself a pretty graphic of it! What do you think?

The Monday Agenda 11/18/2013

How did I do with last week’s agenda?
The Rosie Project12842134

Picture Me Gone

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. Finished at the end of last week, posted my review this week. This book just makes me happy. 🙂

Just One Year by Gayle Forman: Done! My review is here.

Picture Me Gone by Meg Rosoff: Done! I chose not to write a review for this book, as I found myself in the unusual (for me) position of just not really having anything to say. This book is well-written, and I’ve loved some of the previous books by this author, but Picture Me Gone simply didn’t work for me. The story was kind of flat, not much happened, and I didn’t find the characters’ actions and motivations terribly compelling.

Unthinkable by Nancy Werlin: Done! My review is here.

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen: Moving right along! My son and  I are really enjoying Hoot, and hope to wrap it up within the next two weeks.

And in book news… Outlander fans were saddened to learn that the March publication of book #8 in the series (Written In My Own Heart’s Blood) would be delayed… but all heaved a big sigh of relief when a new release date was announced a couple of days later. So who else is counting the days until June 10, 2014??

Fresh Catch:

Three new books this week:

The Lover's DictionarySinful FolkDamn' Rebel Bitches: The Women of the '45

The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan: Borrowed from the library. After reading so many of the author’s young adult novels, I’ve been wanting to check this out too — I’ve heard great things!

Sinful Folk by Ned Hayes: Just received a review copy, looking forward to reading and reviewing this one closer to its January publication date.

Damn Rebel Bitches by Maggie Craig: I treated myself to this history book focusing on the women of the Jacobite rising of 1745 — a gift for my inner Outlander fanatic!

What’s on my reading agenda for the coming week?

ShadowsThe Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic

First up, I’m really looking forward to reading Shadows by Robin McKinley.

Next, I’d like to start The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic by Emily Croy Barker. Guilty confession: I’ve had this ARC sitting on my Kindle for a long time now… but I haven’t forgotten about it!

I think these two will take up the whole week, but if there’s time, I’ll dig into The Lover’s Dictionary as well.

So many book, so little time…

Bookish Bits & Bobs

I realize that all of my posts lately have either been book reviews or ongoing features of one sort or another — but no general musings or *deep* thoughts on the life of a reader. And that’s fine, but maybe it’s time for a general catch-up post with the random pieces of bookish ephemera that have been floating through my life:

  • Call it my mid-October resolution. Because who needs to wait for January 1st? I’m trying to put myself on a book stone-figure-10541_640diet. No more reading the random books that catch my eye until I catch up on my review books! I love the nice folks at NetGalley, but now I’m swamped! I made myself a pretty schedule of reviews a couple of months ago, but alas! I strayed. I read other things. And now I’m behind. So, I hereby resolve to declare “hands off” for all books lying around my house until I get through all of the review copies yet to be read on my Kindle! My goal is to catch up on all books with publication dates up through the end of November. And then I can return to my wanton ways, reading whatever the heck catches my eye at any given moment.girl-160172_1280
  • My new bloggy resolution, aka The Rule of 5 (because I like to give things titles…): I’m going to make more of an effort to explore the blogging world, and my goal is to visit five new blogs each and every day. Wish me luck!
  • Why am I not at New York Comic-Con? (Okay, the answer is that I live on the West Coast; that was a rhetorical question). I’m missing the Outlander panel, and I’m simply green with envy. But this piece at least reassures me that the Starz Outlander series is in very good hands!
  • Now that the fall TV season is underway, I’m finding myself with less time to curl up and read each evening. This is not a good thing. Something has got to go… hmmm, must prune the season-pass shows on my DVR pronto!
  • My son wants to read more graphic novels. The problem is, where to start? If he wants to read Batman, Superman, Spiderman, or Iron Man (or any of their known associates), the choices are simply overwhelming. If you have recommendations on good entry points or sequences for any or all, please drop me a note! Bear in mind that this is for an 11-year-old (although, okay, I may read ’em too!). Thank you mucho.
  • I haven’t been to an author event in ages… so I was excited to see a few appearances coming up in my area that I don’t want to miss! David Levithan, Rainbow Rowell, Gail Carriger… Let’s see if I can actually make it out of my house and attend!
  • A coworker came up to me today and said, “I hear you have a blog! I can’t wait to read it!” Well, I’m of two minds about that. Sure, getting more readers is a good thing. And yes, blogs are by their nature open to the public. But. This is a person who isn’t a personal ftux-161406_640riend, just a coworker. Granted, someone I like a lot and who’s an avid reader, but still. Boundaries. It makes me uncomfortable to think that the line between my work life and my creative outlets may become blurred. I’m interested in others’ experiences: Do you share your blog with everyone in your “real life”? Or do you keep it more or less private, sharing with your online circles but not your actual friends and acquaintances?
  • Again with the 11-year-old: His school has a Doctor Who club! It meets during lunch on Fridays, open to anyone who wants to get together to watch episodes and discuss them. Fun! And yet — nerdy! I encouraged him to go… but mustn’t push. Just because I’d choose Doctor Who over pick-up touch football games doesn’t mean my son needs to.
  • I’m joining the world of audiobooks! Or, at least, I’m giving it a shot. I’ve never been able to focus while listening to a book, but decided to download a copy of the Outlander audiobook last week when heading out by myself for a long walk. I think it helps that I know the story so well — but so far, so good! I’ve been listening in brief snatches during solo car rides… although my real intent was to motivate myself to go to the gym and hit the treadmill or elliptical while listening to the book. Yeah, so far, that hasn’t happened. Still, I’m really having fun listening to the book, and the narrator is truly wonderful, especially with her ability to switch back and forth between her British and Scottish accents. I’m still not sure that I’d  have the patience for a book that’s new to me — but for now, Outlander on ITunes is a treat!

Book News & Stuff That I Find Exciting (or at least noteworthy…):

  • There’s a new Firefly/Serenity comic book series on the way! According to this article, it will pick up after the events of the Serenity movie. I’m in!
  • How do y’all feel about books with movie tie-in covers? I came across this image of the new Australian cover for The Book Thief. Thoughts? I suppose if it attracts more readers to an amazing book, I shouldn’t knock it. Right? But for me personally, I never buy books with movie tie-in covers. *Shudder*
  • Who else is a Madeline fan! C’mon, raise your hands for the old house in Paris all covered in vines! Here’s a great tribute to the 75th anniversary of Madeline.
  • Cover reveal! I can’t wait to read Landline, Rainbow Rowell’s new book due out next July!
  • Are female characters stronger in children’s literature than in adult fiction? Read what author Kate Mosse has to say about it, here.
  • Catcher in the Fry? McDonalds plans to start giving out books instead of toys in Happy Meals. For realz.
  • An end to airbrushing? Verily magazine shows women as they are — no photoshopped bodies or faces allowed.

And that’s all for today! Must unplug, unwind, read a book, go for a walk… it’s the weekend! Happy Saturday, happy reading, and happy whatever-makes-you-happy to all!

Say hello to Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser!

Big news in Outlander world today! After driving fans everywhere absolutely bonkers with all the waiting, Starz has just announced the casting of Claire in its upcoming Outlander TV series.

Say hello to Caitriona Balfe, our new Claire!

CF

I’ll have to take Diana Gabaldon’s word for it in terms of Caitriona’s acting abilities (quote from DG’s Facebook page:

yes, I saw her audition videos with Sam (they were _great_!)

… but she certainly has the right look! Beautiful, isn’t she? Who else is getting really excited about the series?

Outlander fans, what do you think?

I’m actually traveling on the day of my Thursday Quotable #20, so I’m writing this week’s post a week in advance. Instead of picking a quote from my current reading, I’ll highlight a favorite of mine instead:

This week’s Thursday Quotable:

Ye are Blood of my Blood, and bone of my Bone.
I give ye my Body, that we Two might be One.
I give ye my Spirit, ’til our Life shall be Done.
