Retail Therapy: Puzzles for Book Lovers (part 1)

We booklovers tend to spend most of our “just for me” shopping dollars on books… but sometimes, it’s fun to branch out and consider book-adjacent little treats. So today, I’d like to share some of my favorite jigsaw puzzles, which are great in their own right, but also, especially great for book lovers!

Before the pandemic, I probably hadn’t done a jigsaw puzzle in over 10 years (or more). But during the pandemic, I got totally hooked, and ended up doing about one per week (and probably would have done even more, except I tend to get a bit obsessed when working on a puzzle and had to set myself some limits).

I’ve slowed down since then, so now it’s much more of an occasional hobby than a continuous activity — but I’m still always on the lookout for a great puzzle, especially when there’s a book-related angle to it!

For today’s Retail Therapy round-up, I’m focusing solely on bookish puzzles — and in fact, this is only part 1! I have so many bookish puzzles to share that I’ll just focus on one publisher this time around, and will be back with a part 2 in another week or so. I’ll also be sharing yet another post on non-book-related puzzles that I’ve found especially pretty or interesting or unique. There are a lot!

These are just a few of their puzzles — they’re all amazing. Each puzzle has a lot of details from the world it portrays, and comes with a fold-out poster than includes a guide to all the places and characters hidden (or not so hidden) in the illustrations. The puzzles themselves have cleanly cut pieces with a satisfying snap, and are high quality and sturdy.

Keep in mind, there are plenty more from this “World of” series to choose from! Of the others I’ve found so far, some are related to books that I don’t particularly care for (The Great Gatsby), some are from worlds/series/books that I just haven’t read in-depth (or at all) yet, and some are on my maybe/someday list. Whether or not I’m interested in the actual subjects, the puzzles themselves look great!

Retail Therapy: Bookish Delights

I’m trying something new: I thought I’d start doing a semi-regular/recurring feature to highlight different categories of “stuff” I’ve bought recently and recommend.

Honestly, I’m a little on the fence… I’m not a big fan of consumerism, and I’m definitely pro-library, swapping, sharing, etc. But still, I do shop online for most of my day-to-day needs these days, so why not pass along a few recommendations when I find something worth talking about?

Today’s topic: Bookish Delights!

Below is a round-up of book-related goodies I’ve enjoyed in recent months. Any of these would be terrific gifts for a booklover… or why not treat yourself once in a while?

Glocusent USB Rechargeable Book Light:

I love this! It’s a small, portable, book light that clips on to your book (but I also use it with my Kindle). It’s been great for travel, especially for those jet-laggy sort of nights when I can’t sleep and want to keep reading with disturbing my partner!

It comes in five different colors, and is inexpensive too! I originally discoverd this light through a Wirecutter recommendation, and I’m so glad I gave it a try!

3D Printed Bookmark Holders:

Found on Etsy, these bookmark holders don’t take up much space, and they’re just so cute!

They come in a variety of colors, so choose your fave. I got one to sit on my shelf, and another for my Little Free Library so I could have a way to give away bookmarks as well as books.

Kindle/Tablet pillow:

I bought one of these for my husband a couple of years ago when he first started using a Kindle, and he swears by it! The exact version that I bought him doesn’t seem to be available any longer, but if I had to replace it, I think I’d get this one. It’s a similar shape, plus it has pockets!

Cozy Socks 6-pack:

This might not seem obviously book-related… but who doesn’t love to be cozy while curled up with a good book? I bought this pack of six for myself, and when my daughter started ~~stealing~~ borrowing them from me, I ended up getting her a pack of her own.

Stickers, T-shirts, notepads, and more for book fanatics via Kingdom of Threads:

This Etsy shop has everything needed to make a book nerd’s heart beat faster. Pictured is one of the awesome stickers I ordered from them (Wolfsong fans will instantly get the reference)… but I couldn’t stop at just one, and bought a LOT of stickers and other goodies. Everything is just so… epic & awesome!

Candles for booklovers:

I absolutely needed the scent of Lallybroch, but there are plenty of choices, including Mr. Darcy, The Shire, Winter in Narnia, and Book Boyfriend.

Goodies from Ideal Bookshelf:

This is a great source for artwork, cards, puzzles, and more!

I love everything on this site, and if I had unlimited funds, I just know I’d go way, way overboard. (I mean, I would like a custom piece of artwork featuring all of my favorite books!)

Meanwhile, for those of us on a budget, there are pins and prints and other fun items to choose from.

Book sleeves:

I love my padded book sleeves! My daughter gifted these to me a few years ago, and I use them all the time, whenever I want to read on the go. They’re perfect for travel, or even just for days when I’m running around locally but want to have a book handy.

My book sleeves were from an Etsy store called Beyond Booked, but they don’t seem to be active any longer. There are lots of other makers selling book sleeves, in many varieties — different fabrics, some with zippers or pockets, padded or not padded.

My preference is for the simple design, open top, with nice padding. I’ve found an Etsy shop — Carlton Quilts — that seems to have very similar work to the book sleeves I have, with these fabrics plus lots of other really cute patterns.

There are three sizes to choose from:

Small – fits mass market paperbacks
Medium – fits trade paperbacks (pictured above, left)
Large – fits hardcovers (picture above, right)

I’ve found that the medium size is also perfect for my Kindle! Even though I have a Kindle cover, I still prefer to have it cushioned when I travel with it, so I use my medium book sleeve all the time!

Out of Print: Clothing, Totes, Accessories & more

I’ve been a fan of the amazing array of bookish goodies sold by Out of Print for a long time now (and can prove it, if you feel like looking inside my t-shirt drawer or checking out my somewhat impressive collection of totebags)!

They carry such a great mix of products featuring book cover images, character images, and all sort of fantastic bookish graphics, and feature themes including everything from classics to hot-this-moment books (like Fourth Wing, Sunrise on the Reaping, and Emily Henry’s books, to name just a few).

I would be remiss in not highlighting the fact that this weekend is Independent Bookstore Day! Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish wishes to wrap up 2021

I’m not sharing an actual clickable wishlist, and I’ve already either received or treated myself to a lot of books this holiday season… but here are a few bookish items that I dream of, even though they’re mostly big splurges or hard-to-find items or just silly treats that I wouldn’t ever expect to spend money on.

One Day All This Will Be Yours by Adrian Tchaikovsky

I borrowed a copy from the library and loved it. I’d really like my own hard copy, but the physical book was released as a limited edition hardcover and the few sellers I’ve seen listing it have it marked very high. This is a someday, maybe wishlist item for me!

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

I would love a hardcover edition of The Goblin Emperor, but these are very hard to come by, as far as I can see. I’m hoping there will be a reissue at some point, with a cover to match The Witness For the Dead (and the upcoming new release The Grief of Stones).

Pride & Puzzlement jigsaw puzzle

The price isn’t bad — but I just have so many puzzles in my house already that I can’t justify buying another right now!

Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki

This isn’t hard to find or outrageously priced… it’s just that I really don’t need to buy myself more physical books right now. I’ve been wanting to read this, but it’s not a big enough priority for me to rush out and grab a copy.

Elizabeth Bennet Pop Funko

How did I not I not know this existed? This is Elizabeth Bennet from Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (which I’m not ashamed to admit that I love!). There are other characters too, including Jane Bennet and Lady Catherine. Awesome!

Word Cloud Classics

I love these fresh-looking editions of classics! I have a couple, but would never say no to more.

Book Plates

I think it would be fun to have some pretty or whimsical book plates to put inside my books — for those rare occasions when I actually agree to lend a book.

Wooden Book Stand

Or really, any pretty or unusual or decorative book stand. Do I need this? No. But there are occasions (like when I’m eating a big sandwich but don’t want to stop reading) when I could see this being really handy!

Bookish socks (or any other bookish apparel)

I love Out of Print, and have so many of their t-shirts… but not nearly enough socks, hats, totebags, or accessories. There’s always room for more, in my humble opinion.

Saga Deluxe Editions

I love the Saga series, and have the trade paperback editions of all published volumes… but for years, I’ve had my eye on these hardcover deluxe editions too.

OK, so most of these aren’t at all practical, but isn’t that the point of wishes?

Top Ten Tuesday: Great books to give (and receive!)

Well… I don’t celebrate Christmas, so I don’t expect any visits from Santa. But, I did give some wonderful books as gifts in 2020, so I thought I’d highlight a few of my favorites as an alternative to this week’s topic.

1) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: MinaLima Edition: This gorgeous book is perfect for Potter fans! MinaLima is the graphic design house that provides so many of the graphics for the HP films. This book includes full-color illustrations, plus fold-outs and little extras, as well as the full orignal text. (I gave it as a gift, but liked it so much that I bought one for myself too!)

2) Tales of Beedle the Bard illustrated by Chris Riddell: Another treat for HP fans! Chris Riddell is such a talented artist (I have his editions of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and How To Stop Time by Matt Haig). It’s a large-sized book with amazing illustrations, and was a big hit with the person I gave it to.

3) March trilogy by John Lewis: I gave this set to a graphic novel fan who also happens to be fascinated with US history. She loved it.

4) WordCloud editions of classics: I’ve given a few of these over the years, as well as buying a couple for myself. They’re such a fun and cheerful way to share classic fiction.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top ten bookish gifts I’d love to find by the light of my menorah (2019)

My TTT list is partially wish list items, and partially things I’d probably never buy myself, but would 100% be happy to have as gifts. (And yes, some of these are repeats from previous years. A reader can dream, can’t she?) Anyway, practically no one buys me books as gifts, because they all assume I already have ALL the books.

5. This is a hold-over from previous years’ lists. I will always want this Pendleton blanket, but would never actually spend that kind of money on it. (Plus, I don’t think Pendleton is still making them, so good luck tracking one down!)

6. The October Daye series by Seanan McGuire is one of my very favorites, and this fall the first book, Rosemary & Rue, was reissued in hardcover with a bonus novella. And the fangirl in me absolutely wants a copy (even though I already own the paperback and the e-book).

7. Any fun, cute bookish accessory, like bookmarks, bookends, mugs, etc!

Top Ten Tuesday: My best loved bookmarks

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, featuring a different top 10 theme each week. This week’s topic is Favorite Bookmarks. I’m not afraid to admit I’m somewhat of a bookmark hoarder — I just never feel like I have enough!

My favorites tend not to be fancy or expensive. I love going into souvenir shops when I travel and picking up the simple touristy paper bookmarks that can usually be found on the postcard racks. I do have a few other odds and ends as well, so without further ado, here’s a guide to my bookmark collection!

1. Outlander love. You didn’t actually think I’d do a TTT post that doesn’t mention my favorite book series, did you? Here’s a little magnetic Jamie and Claire, who never fail to make me smile while they’re marking my page.

2. It’s Nessie! Isn’t she cute? Not the most practical of bookmarks — she only stays in place when the book is placed carefully on my nightstand. Certainly not a good candidate for reading on the go. Still, she’s just so darn adorable! (Available from Animi Causa)

3. Sassy grandmother — the translation from Hebrew is basically: Bored? Go read a book! (Resting on a copy of Pride and Prejudice — always a good choice.)

4. A super cool leather bookmark with a glamorous masked vampire, a gift from a friend who brought this back for me from New Orleans.

5. Pretty and fancy! Silver and beads, lace and a dragonfly charm, and a golden chamsah. All gifts, all very much appreciated.

6. Travel bookmarks! Just plain paper bookmarks, but I do love bringing them home with me from everywhere I go.

7. A little Ice and Fire is always welcome…

8. This is so true. Heavy books are tough!

9. Girl Power! This bookmark is sold by She Is Booked, and all purchases support charities and women’s causes. Feel good, change the world, and get a great bookmark!

10. Couldn’t resist: Here are just a few of the random items I’ve used as bookmarks in moments of desperation. Because the first and only rule of bookmarks is… always use a bookmark! Dog-earing is for savages.

And a bonus bookmark… because I finished this post and forgot that I took a picture of my magnetic sloth in action! Everyone needs a sloth to hold their page, right?

I’m clearly not a gifted photographer, but I do love my bookmarks, and had lots of fun tracking these down from all their little hiding places around my house.

How and when I got it:

When my book group did a secret book swap a few years ago, this was one of the books in my super-fun package. Thank you, book-giver friend of mine!

Why I want to read it:

Well, first of all, it was a gift, and I always feel terrible when I don’t get around to reading gift books. And on top of that, I think it sounds terrific! Between the ghost story and the family saga and the Bombay setting, it seems to have a lot going for it. I really do need to get to this one soon.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top ten bookish gifts I’d love to find by the light of my menorah (2017)

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, featuring a different top 10 theme each week. This week’s topic is Top Ten Books I Hope Santa Brings… but since I don’t get visits from Santa, I thought I’d make my post title a little more relevant to my life.

Tuesday is the last night of Hanukkah this year. Where did the holiday go? My TTT list this week isn’t really a practical wish list — it’s more about the luxury bookish things that I’d probably never buy myself, but would 100% be happy to have if the little Hanukkah fairies felt like dropping them off. (And yes, some of these are repeats from last year. A reader can dream, can’t she?)

1. Slayers & Vampires: The Complete Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Buffy and Angel by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman: There is ALWAYS room on my shelf for another Buffy book.

2. The illustrated edition of Game of Thrones: Because having beat-up paperback editions on my shelf just isn’t enough. The book looks gorgeous.

3. The Outlander Kitchen: This is funny if you know me, because I absolutely DO NOT COOK. I’m sure my husband would be rolling on the floor laughing hysterically right now if he knew I put a cookbook on my wishlist. But look! It’s Outlander, and it’s so pretty!

4. Any of all of these new Penguin hardcover editions of classic sci fi novels. Don’t these look amazing?

5. Have you seen the Harry Potter collection from Pendleton? Gorgeous… not that I would ever spend this kind of money on a fangirl blanket. But SO gorgeous.

6. I think it might be fun to have a Monopoly set from one of my favorite fandoms:

7. A gorgeous leather-bound edition of a favorite book (oh, say Outlander, for example) from Easton Press.

8. I’d love to find a coffee table book of Moby Dick, with beautiful illustrations and complete annotations of the text. I haven’t actually seen one (although I haven’t looked at that hard either), but that’s what I want.

1. The Hamilton book! Now that I finally have tickets to see the show (May — hurray!), I’m trying to immerse myself in all things Hamilton. And I need this book.

2. The illustrated edition of Game of Thrones: Because having beat-up paperback editions on my shelf just isn’t enough. The book looks gorgeous.

4. Any of all of these new Penguin hardcover editions of classic sci fi novels. Don’t these look amazing?

5. I’ve had a 3rd generation Kindle Keyboard for years now, and it works perfectly, so there’s no reason to replace it. And yet… I’m so tempted by the Kindle Paperwhite, or if I wanted to get even crazier, maybe even the Voyage.

6. How about splurging on a set of great quality Hogwarts robes? Totally practical — I solemnly swear that I’ll wear them on my next trip to the Wizarding World at Universal!

7. This book won’t be released until the end of December, but I really want it — it’s a hardcover collection of John Scalzi’s short works. It’s a relatively small book at a pretty high price, so unless I see a sudden price break, it’s unlikely I’d treat myself.

9. Moving on to the utterly frivolous, I’ve always enjoyed looking at the odds and ends in the Noble Collection, and would happily accept anything from their Harry Potter line.

10. And wrapping it all up, I think any sort of bookish piece of jewelry from Etsy would be awesome. Here’s a necklace I just found. Adorable, right?
