The Monday Check-In ~ 7/20/2015

cooltext1850356879 My Monday tradition, including a look back and a look ahead — what I read last week, what new books came my way, and what books are keeping me busy right now. Plus a smattering of other stuff too.

What did I read last week?

Sweetheart DealAll the LightRoss Poldark

The Sweetheart Deal by Polly Dugan: Done! My review is here.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr: Done, just in time for my book group discussion later this week. Some brief thoughts on this lovely book are here.

Ross Poldark by Winston Graham: Done! Okay, I’ll admit that Aidan Turner was a big part of what drew me to the PBS airing of Poldark, but I ended up really loving the story itself, so I had to give the book a try… and really liked it! It’s my understanding that the 1st season of the TV show covers the first two books in the series, so clearly, I need to keep going! C’mere, book #2!

Off-line:

I just got back from a glorious 10-day trip to the Canadian Rockies. Mountains! Lakes! Incredible natural beauty! I’ll be sharing some highlights and photos in the next few days. Man, it’s hard to return to real life!

Fresh Catch:

A few new books came my way right before I left town:

Canada 433

And… I came home from my trip to find a library notice, saying that my request for Go Set A Watchman is ready for pick-up!

What will I be reading during the coming week?

Currently in my hands:
Maybe in Another LifeGo Set A Watchman

I’m just finishing up Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and will post some thoughts in the next few days.

With some trepidation, I’m about to start Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee. I’m almost tempted to pass it by, but I feel like I need to read it for myself to see what all the uproar is about.

Now playing via audiobook:

Northanger AbbeySense and Sensibility 2

My year of Austen audiobooks continues! I finished Northanger Abbey while on vacation, and have just started Sense and Sensibility. I read all these books so many years ago; getting a refresher via audio is delightful.

Ongoing reads:

EldestABOSAAN&S

One with the kiddo, two with Outlander Book Club. All three should last a good long while.

What did I read last week?

Second LifeJesse's Girl

Second Life by S. J. Watson: I read this earlier, but just posted my review this past week. You can read it here.

Jesse’s Girl by Miranda Kenneally: Done! A light and lovely contemporary YA novel. Check out my review here.

And in graphic novels:

Alex + Ada 2Mush

Alex + Ada, volume 2 by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn: The second volume is just as good as the first! Maybe even better! I’m so happy my library had a copy available, and I read it the instant it arrived. Now I just have to wait for #3 to be released! If you like graphic novels, check out this terrific story about robots, A.I., and yes, love.

Mush! Sled Dogs with Issues by Glenn Eichler and Joe Infurnari: Wrapping up this weirdly random reading week, I read another graphic novel that caught my eye on my way out the door of the library. Mush! is an odd but endearing book about a team of sled dogs… and their power struggles, relationships, manipulations, and anxieties. All seen through the eyes of the dogs. Strange but really enjoyable.

Elsewhere on the blog:

I have another bit of travel coming up starting tomorrow, which got me thinking about travel guidebooks. In this age of online everything, are travel books just things of the past? My thoughts are here; come add yours!

Fresh Catch:

Despite hearing mixed reactions to the Austen Project, I’m eager to read some of the modern versions of Austen’s classics. This week, my copy of Emma arrived:

What will I be reading during the coming week?

Currently in my hands:
Sweetheart DealAll the LightRoss Poldark

I’m leaving on a 10-day vacation, and while I don’t want to over-plan, I have a few books lined up that I’m really excited to read!

I’m in the middle of The Sweetheart Deal by Polly Dugan, which I’m hoping to finish before I head of out town.

For my vacation reads, I’m starting with All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, which my book group will be discussing at the end of the month.

Next, I can’t wait to read Poldark by Winston Graham… especially now that I have such lovely visuals from the BBC production to keep in my mind.

And of course, I’ll have my Kindle on hand, should I need even more bookish choices…

Now playing via audiobook:

Dirty JobNorthanger Abbey

I finished listening to A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore, and absolutely loved it! The narrator makes the funny even funnier. I was surprised to realize I’d completely forgotten how the book ends (I read it when it first came out in 2006), so I’m happy I took the time for a refresher before the sequel arrives in August.

And continuing onward with my Jane Austen kick, I’ve started the audiobook of Northanger Abbey, narrated by Juliet Stevenson (who did such a fabulous job with Emma). Sadly, I won’t have time to listen to the whole thing before I head out of town, and as I don’t think my traveling companions will appreciate listening to Austen in the car, I suppose I’ll have to wait a few weeks to finish.

Ongoing reads:

EldestABOSAAN&S

One with the kiddo, two with Outlander Book Club. All three should last a good long while.

Updated to add: It looks like Eldest will be on hold for a bit, as my kiddo is off to camp for three weeks… and left the book at home!

So many book, so little time…

What did I read last week?

Alex + AdaSecond LifeOur Souls At Night

Alex + Ada by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn: I loved this graphic novel! Just a really clever story about a lonely guy and a sentient AI android named Ada. I really can’t wait to see where this story goes next. Book #2 is next on my request list at the library!

Second Life by S. J. Watson: Finished right before the weekend. My thoughts will be posted on Wednesday, when I’m participating in the blog tour for this book.

Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf: Done! A really gorgeous book. Check out my review, here.

Elsewhere on the blog:

I thought a lot this week about the ways in which information about an author can impact how we respond to a book. I’d love to hear other opinions on the topic! My post is here.

I also finally got around to posting pictures from my Harry Potter adventures in Florida. Check ’em out, here.

Fresh Catch:

One new book this week:

Dreams of the Golden Age

Looking forward to reading the sequel to After the Golden Age!

What will I be reading during the coming week?

Currently in my hands:
Jesse's Girl

I’ve read two books by Miranda Kenneally so far, and thought they were both terrific! I’m just getting started with her newest, but I have high hopes.

Now playing via audiobook:

Dirty Job

I should be done with the audiobook of A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore this week. It’s making me laugh at the most awkward moments… and sometimes, that’s just what I need.

What did I read last week?

6442769blue starsWeightless

Paper Towns by John Green: Read the week before, but I finally managed to post a brief review this past week. Interestingly, while I wasn’t crazy about the book, two of my book group’s members who work with teens felt the book was absolutely spot-on and really meaningful, so we’ve been having some great discussions.

Blue Stars by Emily Gray Tedrowe: Powerful and moving. My review is here.

Weightless by Sarah Bannon: A YA must-read. My review is here.

Eragon

Hasn’t it seemed like I’ve been reading Eragon forever? Yeah, to me too. I finally finished, and wrote a slightly weird review, here.

Off-line:

I went to see Eddie Izzard perform as part of his Force Majeure tour on Friday, and he was brilliant!

Fresh Catch:

Woo hoo! All sorts of books came my way this week, some used, some new. Look at all the pretty:

What will I be reading during the coming week?

I’ve just started Second Life by S. J. Watson, and will be reviewing it for a blog tour post next week. I have high hopes, since I really enjoyed the author’s first book, Before I Go To Sleep.

Now playing via audiobook:

I finished listening to Dead Heat… and now I’m super-sad that I’ve run out of Patricia Briggs audiobooks!

Over the weekend, I started the audiobook of A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore. I absolutely need a refresher before the sequel, Secondhand Souls, comes out in August.

Ongoing reads:

EldestABOSAAN&S

Now that we’ve finished Eragon, the kiddo and I are continuing onward with Eldest, the next in the series.

Plus, in ongoing reads, the Outlander Book Club’s group reads of A Breath of Snow and Ashes and North and South are moving forward! If anyone is interested in joining the fun, just let me know and I’ll send you the info.

I’m back! I was away last week, on a combination theme park vacation and visit to see family. I’ll share some Florida pics later this week… including all the latest from Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley (via Universal). I had some days full of leisurely reading, and some days where I only managed to read a few pages before falling asleep. Here’s what I’ve been up to:

What did I read last week?

Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave: Done! My review is here.

Alive by Chandler Baker: Done! My review is here.

After the Golden Age by Carrie Vaughn: Done! My review is here.

Two books competing for my attention:

  • The Wolf Border by Sarah Hall

Hello June

I can practically taste summer! Can’t you?

What did I read last week?

Mapmaker's ChildrenDay of Atonement

The Mapmaker’s Children by Sarah McCoy: Although I read this book a few weeks ago, I finally posted a review this past week.

The Day of Atonement by David Liss: Done! A great book club discussion book — my review is here.

I also finished…

10964

Yes, I’ve read it about a thousand times already. I decided to reread Outlander this year in sync with the TV series, reading the chapters that more or less matched each week’s episode. And now I’m done! It’ll be a long Droughtlander until season 2 rolls around, I afraid.

Elsewhere on the blog:

I did some spring cleaning! I went through and spruced up my Book Blog Meme Directory page, updating links and archiving out-of-date listings. Want to know more? Check out my post about it, here.

I also wrote a post about one of my newer TV obsessions, Turn. Let me know if you’re a fan too!

Fresh Catch:

I picked up a copy of Chris Pavone’s latest, after really enjoying The Expats. And thanks to a book club book swap, I received two books that look they’ll be perfect summer reads.

What did I read last week?

I finished the book I’d started on the plane ride home from vacation last week, The Expats, and read a YA ARC and a graphic novel as well:

Expats5 to 1Fables vol 21

My review of The Expats is here. A really enjoyable thriller!

5 to 1 by Holly Bodger: The best things I can say about this YA dystopian novel is a) it’s short and b) it has a really pretty cover. The writing annoyed me, told half in verse and half in prose, and the whole set-up was pretty boring and predictable. Just… nope. I didn’t bother writing a review.

I also read the newest Fables volume (#21 – Happily Ever After). I love this graphic novel series so, so much — and I’m so sad it’s coming to an end! Happily Ever After is an odd title for this volume, as many characters are most decidedly not happy at all, and it’s also not the last. There’s one more volume to come, and I’d dying to read it while also scared to death that I’ll be upset with the fate of certain characters. I especially want an HEA ending for my favorite couple, but all signs point to NO. Sigh… According to Amazon, we’ll have all our answers at the end of July. Meanwhile, I suppose I should catch up on the Fables spin-off series, Fairest.

Dead LandsAll I Love and Know

Also this past week, I posted reviews of some of the books I read while on vacation the prior week. Here are the links:

Elsewhere on the blog:

Prompted in part by my underwhelming experience with 5 to 1, I wrote a blog post about book plots and genres that I am just so over.

On a much more positive note — wanna see where I was the week before last? Check out my Alaska post!

Fresh Catch:

I did a bunch of random book ordering from my favorite online used book sources prior to my vacation, and all of my new pretties arrived while I was away! This was definitely fun to come home to:

What will I be reading during the coming week?

I’m a bit behind, but I’m trying to finish up this month’s Book of the Month discussion book so I can join the conversation over at Outlander Book Club.

Now playing via audiobook:

I can’t help it! I seem to be hooked on the audiobooks for Patricia Briggs’s marvelous books! This is the last one, and then I’ll have to move on.

Ongoing reads:

The Outlander Book Club’s new classic read is North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. We’re reading and discussing two chapters per week. All are welcome! Contact me if you’d like to join in.

What did I read last week?

I’m back! I just returned from my week in  Alaska late last night, and I have a ton of unpacking (and laundry) still to do. Plus, I absolutely will do a post later this week about my trip, to include some favorite photos (including a particularly cute/weird porcupine). Here’s what I read while I was away:

Dead LandsAll I Love and KnowExpats
  • The Dead Lands by Benjamin Percy
  • All I Love and Know by Judith Frank
  • The Expats by Chris Pavone — not quite done, but after a lot of reading on the plane, it’s close!

I hope to find time this week to put together reviews for all of these. I took lots of notes — we’ll see if I can figure out what they all mean!

Elsewhere on the blog:

I’m running a giveaway for a copy of the new historical novel by Sarah McCoy, The Mapmaker’s Children:

Mapmaker's Children

There’s still time to enter! I’ll be picking a winner on May 20th — enter to win here.

Offline:

TRAVEL! Sigh. I love vacations. I love vacation reading. I need more VACATION now please thank you.

Fresh Catch:

Traveling with my daughter means at least one visit to a bookstore, if not more. We ended up in a really funky, odd bookstore in Homer, Alaska called Observance of Hermits, featuring one of my favorite bookstore signs ever:

IMG_2385

We also stopped at Title Wave Books in Anchorage (great name, right?), which is a huge store selling used and new books. And naturally, I couldn’t quite resist temptation. Here’s what I bought:

What will I be reading during the coming week?

Currently in my hands:

Just a bit more to go! And then I truly have a dilemma — I have no idea what I’ll read next!

Now playing via audiobook:

Shifting

My daughter — also a Patricia Briggs fan — didn’t have to work too hard to convince me that this story collection would be a perfect choice for listening to on the road! Now that I’m back, I need a new audio read, and I’m leaning toward Mansfield Park by Jane Austen, narrated by the fabulous Juliet Stevenson, whose narration I loved so much in Emma.

Ongoing reads:

A new classic read! The Outlander Book Club is starting its group read of North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. We’re reading and discussing two chapters per week. All are welcome! Contact me if you’d like to join in.

The Bookseller by Cynthia Swanson: My blog tour post and review is here. (Loved the book!)

Rook by Sharon Cameron. DNFd at 38%. Such a letdown. I wanted to love this book. Click here if you want to see what I said about Rook on Goodreads:

Offline:

In my “real” life, things are busy as always. I did manage to sneak in two fun outings this past week — dinner with a good friend after months of our schedules never matching up, and then The Book of Mormon with my husband just last night. (It rocked.)

A Groupon for a local used book store was burning a hole in my pocket (it was about to expire), so here’s what I picked up:

What will I be reading during the coming week?

I’m trying to get a jump start on my review commitments for May. I’m reading The Mapmaker’s Children by Sarah McCoy so I’ll have my blog tour post ready in advance. Planning ahead? How unusual!

Now playing via audiobook:

emma

I’m so close to the end of the Emma audiobook! Juliet Stevenson is an amazing narrator, and I’ve really loved every minute. I’ll be traveling next week and probably won’t start another audiobook until I get back — but when I do, it’ll be tempting to listen to more Austen à la Stevenson!

I just haven’t had time for much of anything — including, it would seem, thinking ahead. Looks like I won’t be doing a TTT post this week. I looked at the topic and drew a tremendous blank… and I just don’t have any brain cells to spare at the moment. But I’ll dive back in next week, I’m sure!

I’m participating in the blog tour for The Bookseller by Cynthia Swanson this week, so finishing the book is priority #1! After that, I plan to read Rook by Sharon Cameron.

Now playing via audiobook:

I finished my most recent mystery via audiobook — see above for the link to my review of A Cold Day for Murder by Dana Stabenow.

I’ve just started listening to Emma by Jane Austen (narrated by Juliet Stevenson) — and it is a total hoot! I’ve read the book before, but listening to it, especially all of the dialogue, is a blast.

Ongoing reads:

I’ll be reading the first two here for months to come — one with my kiddo and one with Outlander Book Club. Also in Outlander world, I’m more or less reading along with the TV show, trying to read the chapters that I think will be covered in each week’s new episode — which is definitely time- consuming on top of all of my other reading! (I read about 100 pages for the most recent episode…)
