I’m *this close* to the end of The Steep & Thorny Way, and I’m loving it! If only the world would go away for a few hours, I might actually finish today. If you think a Hamlet retelling set in 1920s rural Oregon sounds like an unlikely concept… well, you have no idea how well it works!

“Do you hope to get married someday?” he asked.

“As long as I don’t fall in love with a man the wrong color.”

He exhaled a steady stream of air through his nostrils. “I think love and wrong are two deeply unrelated words that should never be thrown into the same sentence together. Like dessert and broccoli.”

Clearly, I’m on a role with this series! I just can’t get enough of the characters, the setting, or the tone that keeps veering between sarcastic and serious. In terms of context, the term “breakup” here refers to the the time of year, roughly March and April, when the snow in Alaska melts, winter ends, but everything is slushy and people and animals get a little cranky and a little crazy.

What with one thing and another, it had been a very long twenty-four hours, even for breakup. Not one but two close encounters of the ursine kind, a jet engine falling out of the sky to smash flat her primary means of summer transportation, a hole in the roof and, oh yes, let us not forget, income tax.

And now, on top of everything else, a body.

I’m so glad that I took the time to re-read this book! I suppose I should thank my son’s middle school English teacher for assigning it to the class, which inspired me to pick it up as well.

The Giver told him that it would be a very long time before he had the colors to keep.

“But I want them!” Jonas said angrily. “It isn’t fair that nothing has color!”

“Not fair?” The Giver looked at Jonas curiously. “Explain what you mean.”

“Well…” Jonas had to stop and think it through. “If everything’s the same, then there aren’t any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things! A blue tunic, or a red one?”

He looked down at himself, at the colorless fabric of his clothing. “But it’s all the same, always.”

Then he laughed a little. “I know it’s not important, what you wear. It doesn’t matter. But — ”

“It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” The Giver asked him.

The Travelers

I’m loving this tense spy thriller, which features a lot of moving parts and people doing mysterious things. I’ve read about 40% so far, and just wish I had time to read straight through to the end without interruption! One thing I’m really enjoying is that beyond the intrigue and spy shenanigans, there are a lot of little moments that show so much about marriage and relationships:

This is one of the things that drives Chloe crazy about this renovation project, about her husband in general. She doesn’t care if everything is perfect; she merely wants it to be good enough. And this is exactly why Will doesn’t let her handle any of it. he knows that she will settle, will make compromises that he wouldn’t.

Here’s another:

Will sprawls amid the sheets while Chloe rearranges her hair, and replaces earrings, reties her scarf, all these tasks executed distractedly but deftly, the small competencies of being a woman, skills unknowable to him. The only thing men learn is how to shave.

Cinders. Embers. Ashes. Michelle hoped that whatever strength had allowed this child to survive the fire all those years ago was a strength that still burned inside her. That it would go on burning, hotter and hotter, until she was as bright as the rising sun.

She would need that strength for what lay ahead.

All the Winters After

I’m in love with this book! If only I didn’t have little things like work and sleep interrupting, I would have finished by now. Amazing characters, fascinating personal journeys, and a to-die-for setting in Alaska all make this a great read. Here a brief description of some of my favorite sights in Alaska:

All along the bench of land above the bay, fireweed spread like its namesake, setting the slope ablaze in the most vibrant fuchsia. In this land known for everything large and majestic — mountains, eagles, glaciers, bears, even its mosquitoes, which Alaskans called the state bird — the tiny, pale state flower popped up everywhere, those delicate sky-colored forget-me-nots with their pinpointed yellow centers, as if the sun had sacrificed a part of itself in order to anoint each one with a sacred droplet of light.

I’m about 25 pages from the end of this odd, sweet, fascinating book about a mad scientist, a witch, and the end of the world. The writing can be beautiful and sad, but it also includes some weirdly funny bits, like this:

Theodolphus had not eaten ice cream since the poisoning at the mall, and he didn’t deserve any now. Ice cream was for assassins who finished their targets. Still, he kept imagining how ice cream would taste, how it would melt on his tongue and release layers of flavor. He no longer trusted ice cream, but he needed ice cream.

I just love this series of girls-in-sports YA novels by Miranda Kenneally! The characters are so real and honest… and occasionally awkward:

“It’s a beautiful night…” Ty says.

“Yup. I love fall…”

“Me too. It’s my favorite season…”

“Mine too…” I eat another cookie.

Do we have anything to talk about?

When we’re hooking up, it seems like we have lots to talk about, but maybe that’s because we’re too busy kissing. This lack of conversation, this isn’t what love is supposed to be like, right? But what happens when you don’t find that right person? Do you just spend the rest of your life in a relationship where the conversation isn’t great, everything isn’t perfect, but it is nice and sweet?

This science fiction/crime story is so weird and fun! I mean, how can you not love a book where this is a “normal” conversation with a real estate agent:

“Will your body be physically present, and if so, will you need a room for a caretaker?” she asked.

“My body and its caretaking are already squared away,” I said. “I won’t be needing space for either. At least not right away.”
