Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, featuring a different top 10 theme each week. This week’s topic is Top Ten Favorite Books Of 2017.
According to Goodreads, I gave a 5-star rating to 76 books in 2017. SEVENTY-SIX. That’s a lot. So how to narrow down my top books to just 10? Here are the books I consider the best of the best from my 2017 reading — not necessarily books published in 2017; simply the books I read this past year that I loved the most. (And okay, I cheated a bit and snuck in more than 10!)
Note: If you want to know more about any of the books mentioned here, click on the links to see my reviews.
1) Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant (review)
2) La Belle Sauvage (The Book of Dust, #1) by Philip Pullman (review)
3) The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden (review)
4) A whole bunch of books by Gail Carriger! (reviews here and here)
5) How to Stop Time by Matt Haig (review)
6) Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin (review)
7) Love and Other Consolation Prizes by Jamie Ford (review)
8) Leviathan Wakes (review)/Caliban’s War/Abaddon’s Gate (review) by James S. A. Corey
9) A first introduction to the world of Georgette Heyer (reviews here, here, here, and here)
10) Two classics that I finally tackled (and adored):

Thanks for sharing your link!
“Great Expectations” is one of my favourite classics. I read it in high-school and I was so fascinated with the story.
Carmen`s Reading Corner
I can’t believe it took me until this year to finally read it! I’m so glad I did. Looking forward to reading more Dickens in the coming year.
Happy to see Young Jane Young on your list! I really enjoyed that one.
It was so good! She’s a great writer — I keep recommending this book to friends.
Awesome list!! Most of these are favorites for me too or are on my TBR 😀 Young Jane Young is wonderful, and I loved How to Stop Time so much!
Oh, How to Stop Time was incredible! I think I’ll need to do a re-read before too long.
So many people seem to love Gail Carriger. I really need to read a few of her books next year. Nice list!
I love everything by Gail Carriger! Start with the Parasol Protectorate books — such a great series!
I’m still on my library’s waiting list for The Bear and the Nightingale. It sure sounds good.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
I hope it comes soon — such a great book!
I’m so happy to see Georgette Heyer on your list and These Old Shades is one of my favorites. The Bear and The Nightingale has been on my TBR List forever.
I wish I’d tried Georgette Heyer sooner! I loved the four books I read, and can’t wait for more. Do you have any other favorite GH books you’d recommend?
I’m so glad you loved Great Expectations. I really need to read that, The Book of Dust, and The Bear and the Nightingale!! Great post!

Great Expectations was so good! I was expecting to really have to work at it, but once I started, I really couldn’t put it down.
I adored The Bear and the Nightingale! Such a beautiful book! I’m currently reading the sequel and enjoying that as well.
I just finished the sequel this past week! Now I can’t wait for #3!
Great list, Lisa, sounds like you had an amazing reading year this year! I’m really pleased to see Into the Drowning Deep, The Bear and the Nightingale and How to Stop Time on your list – they’re all on my TBR! And all those Gail Carrigers, too! I’m making my way through the Parasol Protectorate books at the moment, so I’m glad to hear her other series are just as entertaining.
I didn’t think I’d enjoy the other Gail Carriger series as much as the Parasol Protectorate (which I loved) — I’m so glad I finally gave them a chance! If you’re considering continuing with the Finishing School books, maybe give the audiobooks a try. So much fun.
I’m so intrigued by The Bear And The Nightingale! Fab list. 🙂
It’s wonderful (and the audiobook is really terrific too.) 🙂
I didn’t get around to The Book of Dust yet! I kept planning a Golden Compass re-read.. I think I might still have to do that first. 🙂
I did a re-read (via audio) of the His Dark Materials series right before The Book of Dust, and I’m so glad I did! Well worth the time.
I really hope that I get La Belle Sauvage and The Bear and the Nightingale for Christmas. It feels like every book blogger has read and loved these books. 😀
I hope you get the books you want for Christmas!
Thank you! Me too 😉
Yes, La Belle Sauvage was wonderful! 🙂 I still need to write a review for it though. Sigh! I’m so behind. 🙁
How to Stop Time is one of the books I’ll be receiving in a book subscription box in February. I hope I enjoy it as much as you did. 🙂
I hope so too! I’ll look forward to hearing what you think of it! I really loved La Belle Sauvage, but hate having to wait for the next book in the series. 🙂
Waiting is the worst! 😭 I really need some explanations from Mr. Pullman and soon. I feel you!
