Welcome to Shelf Control — an original feature created and hosted by Bookshelf Fantasies.
Shelf Control is a weekly celebration of the unread books on our shelves. Pick a book you own but haven’t read, write a post about it (suggestions: include what it’s about, why you want to read it, and when you got it), and link up! Title: Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters, #1)
Author: Juliet Marillier
Published: 1999
Length: 554 pages
What it’s about (synopsis via Goodreads):
Lovely Sorcha is the seventh child and only daughter of Lord Colum of Sevenwaters. Bereft of a mother, she is comforted by her six brothers who love and protect her. Sorcha is the light in their lives: they are determined that she know only contentment.
But Sorcha’s joy is shattered when her father is bewitched by his new wife, an evil enchantress who binds her brothers with a terrible spell, a spell which only Sorcha can lift—by staying silent. If she speaks before she completes the quest set to her by the Fair Folk and their queen, the Lady of the Forest, she will lose her brothers forever.
When Sorcha is kidnapped by the enemies of Sevenwaters and taken to a foreign land, she is torn between the desire to save her beloved brothers, and a love that comes only once. Sorcha despairs at ever being able to complete her task, but the magic of the Fair Folk knows no boundaries, and love is the strongest magic of them all…
How and when I got it:
I’ve had an old paperback on my shelves for years — no idea exactly where it came from!
Why I want to read it:
I’m always up for a good faerie kingdom story, and this is a book (and series) that I’ve seen recommended many times over the years. It regularly appears in lists of great fantasy series, and I know I’ve seen readers with tastes that align with my own talk about how much they love this book.
The plot sounds complicated but compelling. Faerie bargains, strange kingdoms, and mystical elements all sound right up my alley — plus, from descriptions on Goodreads and elsewhere, it seems that these books are very much influenced by Celtic folklore, which absolutely appeals to me.
Daughter of the Forest is the first in a six-book series. I tend to be pretty reluctant these days about starting new series… but I do feel tempted to at least give this first book a try.
What do you think? Would you read this book?
Please share your thoughts!

I’ve read this book two or three times now! It can be heavy at times, but it’s beautifully written and compelling.
That’s so great to hear! Have you read the full series?
I read the second and third books, but tapered off after that. I’m not great at continuing to care about big generational sagas like that, lol.
I haven’t yet tried any of Marillier’s books, but I’d like to read this one. It does sound good.
Her name comes up a lot on “best fantasy” lists, so I’ve been wanting to try one of her books for a while now.
I haven’t read this series either but I always hear good things as well!
If my stack of obligation reading ever gets more manageable, I’d like to read more classic fantasy, and I think this one might fit!
Looks rather interesting, but like you these days, I’m not too keen on committing to too many books, and these look quite lengthy volumes too.
Yes, being overcommitted and not wanting to start even more series is my key hesitation!
I absolutely loved this book! I read it when it first came out. And it wraps up everything enough at the end that you really don’t need to read the rest of the series if you don’t want to; I never read any of the other books, but I did love this one.
I’m so excited to hear that you loved it!! And it’s great to know that it works on its own — I just don’t think I can bring myself to commit to a full series right now. Thank you so much!
I been hearing a lot of good things about this book is. I have hardback somewhere on my bookshelf. I’m going to has to find it and read.
Sounds great — I’ll have to read my copy too! 🙂
Here’s this week’s entry in the shelf control category! 🙂

Thanks for sharing!
I am really fond of this Juliet Marillier series. She was one of my first introductions to adult fantasy and I just love how all her books feel very fairy-tale-ish.
That’s awesome to hear! Are there any other of her books you’d recommend?
I haven’t read any of her recent works, but I am quite fond of her Wildwood duology as well.
