My wishlist book this week is:

Doctor Sleep (The Shining, #2)

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
(release date September 24, 2013)

From Goodreads:

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Why do I want to read this?

Hello? Stephen King? The Shining? Sequel? This one is a no-brainer. I’m so excited to see where the story goes, what’s become of Danny since his horrific boyhood, and what will happen when he finally confronts the people of the True Knot.

It’s been many, many years since I read The Shining, and I think I need a refresher. Fortunately, Charleen at Cheap Thrills and Tif at Tif Talks Books are hosting a read-along from September 2 – 23! Visit their blogs for more info — it should be fun!

    • I’ve been keeping up with his newer works in the last few years, although there are piles and piles of Stephen King books that I have yet to read. I especially want to reread The Shining because my memories of the book are completely overshadowed by the movie, and I want to have the book fresh in my mind before I read the sequel. Thanks for stopping by!

    • Thanks, Ciska! My copy of The Shining is so old and yellowed, practically falling apart — but in a way, that makes it even more fun to go back to. I feel like I don’t have time for a re-read (so much new stuff pending!), but this is one of those “slow down and enjoy your reading” moments for me, I think. 🙂

    • Ugh, Cujo! I did not like that book at all! Please promise not to judge all Stephen King books by Cujo! He is such a brilliant writer — but that one would be pretty close to the bottom of the list for me.

  1. Ooh, that readalong is so tempting!! I decided I wasn’t going to re-read The Shining before Doctor Sleep’s release. Ugh. I keep going back and forth on that. My thoughts are since Danny is grown now, the details won’t need to be fresh in my mind. Is that naive? I know how up in the references Stephen King can get… :/

    • I wish I knew what to tell you! I also thought I’d skip the re-read… but then, since I’m so excited about Doctor Sleep, I started to reconsider — because what if it enhances the reading experience for DS to have those details in mind? I agree, Stephen King usually makes tons of references to previous works that tie in, and it may not be essential to “get” all of those, but it might make it more meaningful. I need more hours in my day!! That’s the only solution.

  2. Only read one King book so far, ‘Salem’s Lot’ and wasn’t really a fan. But that doesn’t mean that I have cast him off yet. I didn’t know he was making a sequel to ‘The Shining’. Apparently that just went below my radar.

    • Hi Megan, thanks for stopping by! Stephen King’s body of work is so huge that I think if one piece of it (such as earlier horror works like ‘Salem’s Lot) doesn’t work for you, there’s probably something else that will! I’ve really loved the more recent books that I’ve read, especially Under The Dome (don’t be fooled by the mediocre TV version) and 11/22/63. I’m just always blown away by his talent for storytelling. I’ve only read a fraction of what he’s written, but I keep finding more and more to love!

    • You’re welcome! I think it’s such a brilliant idea — and I just have to make myself disciplined enough to find time for The Shining. I took my battered old copy off the shelf last night, so that’s step one!

    • Not super weird — just missing out on an amazing writer! 🙂 His body of work is so huge and so varied, you’re bound to find something that works for you. Thanks!
