Thursday Quotables: Charming

Welcome back to Thursday Quotables! This weekly feature is the place to highlight a great quote, line, or passage discovered during your reading each week.  Whether it’s something funny, startling, gut-wrenching, or just really beautifully written, Thursday Quotables is where my favorite lines of the week will be, and you’re invited to join in!

This week’s Thursday Quotable:

I mean, yeah, I lost everything I ever worked for or cared about or believed in because of my condition, and I can’t ever just relax and enjoy life because the great-grandchildren of people I grew up idolizing are trying to hunt me down and kill me, and a woman I loved was killed because of me, and I sometimes feel this other thing scratching away at my consciousness, and I can’t tell if it’s trying to get in or trying to get out, which is a little unsettling, and according to the little voices that were beaten into me from an early age by strict Catholic monster hunters, I’m damned and going to hell, which can be a bit hard on my self-esteem to put it mildly. But it could be worse. So, yeah, I’m lucky, OK? I’m blessed. And by the way, shove it up your ass.

And one more:

My instinct was that she should find the son of a bitch right then and force the issue into the open, but my instinct was also to stab him immediately afterward, multiple times. I still had no idea how I was going to broach that topic with Sig. She didn’t drink wine, and even if she did, I didn’t know if red or white was appropriate for telling a woman that you want to kill her former lover. Do they have greeting cards for that sort of thing?

You would think I’d never jumped off a cliff before, based on how long I stood there. Not jumping.

Of course, I’d never made this jump before.

From my current obsession:

The rational part of his mind told him she was just a fragment of unremembered bad dream that had followed him out of sleep and across the hall to the bathroom. That part insisted that if he opened the door again, there would be nothing there. But another part of him, the part that shone, knew better. The Overlook wasn’t done with him.

If you are a teenager now, it is unlikely that you knew us well. We are your shadow uncles, your angel godfathers, your mother’s or your grandmother’s best friend from college, the author of that book you found in the gay section of the library. We are characters in a Tony Kushner play, or names on a quilt that rarely gets taken out anymore. We are the ghosts of the remaining older generation. You know some of our songs.

We do not want to haunt you too somberly. We don’t want our legacy to be gravitas. You wouldn’t want to live your life like that, and you won’t want to be remembered like that, either. Your mistake would be to find our commonality in our dying. The living part mattered more.

We taught you how to dance.

Kathryn was waiting at the car. She was crying, and laughing at herself for crying, outdone by the sheer unmitigated suck of it all. Later he would recall the scrabbling action in her hug, as if she were sliding down a cliff face and clawing for purchase. She shut the door behind him and stepped back, then tossed off a windmilling cartoon salute. Billy could not have been more spent if he’d just run a marathon. It felt like organ failure, like his face was melting, but the car was backing down the driveway and the worst was over.

I’m actually traveling on the day of my Thursday Quotable #20, so I’m writing this week’s post a week in advance. Instead of picking a quote from my current reading, I’ll highlight a favorite of mine instead:

This week’s Thursday Quotable:

Ye are Blood of my Blood, and bone of my Bone.
I give ye my Body, that we Two might be One.
I give ye my Spirit, ’til our Life shall be Done.

This week’s Thursday Quotable:

I know that some of you reading this are convinced humans are a myth, but I am here to state that they do actually exist.

And a bit further on:

Magazines are very popular, despite no human’s ever feeling better for having read them. Indeed their chief purpose is to generate a sense of inferiority in the reader that consequently leads to a feeling of needing to buy something, which the humans then do, and then feel even worse, and so need to buy another magazine to see what they can buy next.

This week’s Thursday Quotable:

The buzz in the street was like the humming of flies. Photographers stood massed behind barriers patrolled by police, their long-snouted cameras poised, their breath rising like steam. Snow fell steadily on to hats and shoulders; gloved fingers wiped lenses clear. From time to time there came outbreaks of desultory clicking, as the watchers filled the waiting time by snapping the white canvas tent in the middle of the road, the entrance to the tall red-brick apartment block behind it, and the balcony on the top floor from which the body had fallen.

This week, I’m featuring two different passages from two different books — one that made my heart ache, and one that put a smile on my face.

Thursday Quotable #1:

My body is filled with complete emptiness and complete longing at the same time, only there’s not enough space in me for both, so they fight and argue and run masking tape down my middle to divide me.

Author: Daisy Whitney

Thursday Quotable #2:

If it were up to my dad, my entire life would be on video.

Anything I do, he grabs his phone. “Opal,” he’ll yell to my mother, “Rafe is eating corn flakes. We gotta get this on film.”
