Yes, more Kate Shugak! I can’t get enough of this series. I read books 11 and 12 this past week, and thought I’d share a passage from #12 that appealed to the introvert in me:

The great thing about the moose and the grizzly and the wolf was that they had not been gifted by their creator with the power of speech. They couldn’t make conversation. The moose might kick your ass and the grizzly might rip it off and the wolf might eat it, but they wouldn’t talk you to death while they got on with the job.

Rush Oh

I reviewed this wonderful book last week (check out my review here). It’s about a whaling community in Australia in 1908, and if that sounds a bit odd or dry — well, I promise you won’t think so once you start reading it! Here’s a lovely little moment that captures the tone of the narrator’s voice:

He was smiling at me and his eyes were shining in the darkness, and at that point, I’m afraid that something within me seemed to seize up in a kind of panic. Any girlish gaiety that I had been blessed with at birth had stiffened and stuck from lack of use, and although I was only nineteen years of age, I felt unable to rise to the obvious demands of the occasion.

“I’m sorry. I’m no good at this. I can’t do it,” I said, lurching abruptly to my feet.

Swiftly he reached up and pulled me back down again.

“Do what?”

“This light-hearted banter between the sexes that you are obviously hoping for.”

“Of course you can do it! You’ve been doing it extremely well up to this moment.”

“That is kind of you to say, but I am only too aware of my shortcomings…”

Angel & Faith: Death and Consequences by Christos Gage and Rebekah Isaacs

I went on a Buffy binge this week! I read a total of eleven volumes of graphic novels from the Buffy-verse — including Buffy season 9, Angel & Faith season 9, and a stand-alone Willow book. It might be weird to pick a quote from a graphic novel, but I can’t resist! It’s been so much fun to be back with the gang again. The comic series does an amazing job of staying true to the characters — their personalities, appearances, and speech patterns.

So, here’s a little snippet of a wonderful little Spike moment:

Baby slayers. I missed baby slayers. The angst, the attitude… bit like a soap opera with weapons.

The final book in the Miss Peregrine series throws us right into the action as of the very first page::

We were boxed in, a wall hard to one side and glass shin-deep on the other, two strides from a creature whose only natural instinct was to disassemble us — and yet it made no move to close the gap. It seemed rooted to the floor, swaying on its heels like a drunk or a sleepwalker, death’s head drooping, its tongues a nest of snakes I’d charmed to sleep.

Me. I’d done that. Jacob Portman, boy nothing from Nowhere, Florida. It was not currently murdering us — this horror made of gathered dark and nightmares harvested from sleeping children — because I had asked it not to. Told it in no uncertain terms to unwrap its tongue from around my neck. Back off, I’d said. Stand, I’d said — in a language made of sounds I hadn’t known a human mouth could make — and miraculously it had, eyes challenging me while its body obeyed. Somehow I had tamed the nightmare, cast a spell over it. But sleeping things wake and spells wear off, especially those cast by accident, and beneath its placid surface I could feel the hollow boiling.

This puzzling book left me scratching my head as I tried to figure out the meaning behind all the plot twists… but still, I very much enjoyed the writing:

The tenth time I kissed Leaf, he kissed me back. We were in the meadow behind the Bell farm and his thin lips were tender and arrogant, exactly, exactly how I thought they would be, exactly how I wanted them to be, he pulled away and groaned against my cheek and that dark, empty part in my chest where my heart had never been, it started beating, beating, beating and I felt joy, red and dripping. He picked me up and turned me over so my back pressed into the grass and the bright little wildflowers, and my fresh new heart faced the sky.

This slim little book about what happens to children who disappear into other worlds after their adventures end is fully of wildly vivid and beautiful language:

… Nancy stood, frozen and temporarily forgotten, in the shadows on the porch. She knew, in an academic way, that she should hurry after them — that she shouldn’t stand out here alone, where anything could happen to her. But that seemed hasty, and dangerous. Stillness was safer. Stillness had saved her before, and it would save her now.

She had forgotten how much like pomegranate juice a bloodstain could look, in the right light.

She had forgotten how beautiful it was.

I know it must seem like all I do is read Kate Shugak books, but honestly, I do read other things as well! However… the Kate books always have terrific descriptions that I can’t resist quoting.

“Quiet!” Chopper Jim bellowed out the command with all the authority of twenty-five years of experience.

It didn’t silence the Amartuq Creek Debating Society, but it woke up a peacefully slumbering grizzly male in a clump of diamond willow across the creek, who had been sleeping off the stupefying effect of a dozen early silvers gulped for brunch. Jim’s bellow startled him to his feet, where he tripped over a branch, somersaulted down the bank and into the creek with a tremendous splash, followed by an even more tremendous bawl of outrage that flushed birds from every tree in sight, startled a yearling moose out of a thicket and caused a family of otters to vacate their fishing hole for less boisterous habitation downstream.

There’s always some clever or quippy dialogue to entertain me too:

His eyes lifted quickly to hers, and his slow smile told her exactly what he was thinking. Still, he hesitated. “How are your various aches and pains?”

“Variously achy and painy,” she said, “but don’t let that stop you.”

Miss Peregrine

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

I read this book back in 2011, and now I’m listening to the audiobook to get reacquainted with the story before reading books 2 and 3. The first-person narrative is working really well via audio, even though I miss all the odd pictures!

I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen. The first of these came as a terrible shock and, like anything that changes you forever, split my life into halves: Before and After.
