It’s never a bad time for Harry Potter.

A week ago, Harry would have said finding a partner for a dance would be a cinch compared to taking on a Hungarian Horntail. But now that he had done the latter and was facing the prospect of asking a girl to the ball, he thought he’d rather have another round with the dragon.

Oh, the woes of a teen boy faced with the horror of getting a date:

“Why do they have to move in packs?” Harry asked Ron as a dozen or so girls walked past them, sniggering and staring at Harry. “How’re you supposed to get one on their own to ask them?”

“Lasso one?” Ron suggested.

Farewell to Arms 2

I’m only on chapter two at this point — but I’ve never read Hemingway before, and I really enjoyed this paragraph from the very first page:

In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves.

I have no idea what to expect, but I’m intrigued by the writing style and want to know more!

Bag of Bones

I seem to be on a Stephen King tear right now, probably because it’s summer, and somehow King’s brand of writing ends up being my perfect choice for beach reading. (What does that say about me???) I really loved Bag of Bones and the creepy mood sustained throughout.

That’s enough, a voice in my mind said uneasily. That’s enough, now. Go on back and get your car.

Except that wasn’t the plan. The plan was to go down the driveway, just as I had in the final dream, the nightmare. The plan was to prove to myself that there was no shroud-wrapped monster lurking in the shadows of the big old log house down there. The plan was pretty much based on that bit of New Age wisdom which says the word “fear” stands for Face Everything And Recover. But, as I stood there and looked down at that spark of porch light (it looked very small in the growing darkness), it occurred to me that there’s another bit of wisdom, one not quite so good-morning-starshine, which suggests fear is actually an acronym for Fuck Everything And Run. Standing there by myself in the woods as the light left the sky, that seemed like the smarter interpretation, no two ways about it.

HARRY POTTER! Seriously, HARRY POTTER! I read this on Sunday, and have been flipping through it since. It’s all wonderful, but here are a few favorite (non-spoilery) moments:

Scorpius: You know it’s the strangest of things, but ever since being in the scariest place imaginable I’m pretty much good with fear. I am — Scorpius the Dreadless. I am – Malfoy the Unanxious.

On a more serious note:

Harry: [Name deleted], playing with Time? You know we can’t do that.

[Name deleted]: How many people have died for the Boy Who Lived? I’m asking you to save one of them.

One more:

Albus: So what would you like me to do? Magic myself popular? Conjure myself into a new House? Transfigure myself into a better student? Just cast a spell, Dad, and change me into what you want me to be, okay? It’ll work better for both of us. Got to go. Train to catch. Friend to find.

I loved this book! I’m traveling this week, but when I get home, I plan to read it all the way through again… this time, calmly and with an eye for detail, rather than just inhaling it as fast as possible.

I read this book on vacation last week, and it gave me chills in all the right ways! How had I never come across this book until now? I love so much about it, including the fact that I can flip it open to a random page and immediately find a paragraph to share for Thursday Quotables:

Garraty became entranced with the coming dawn. He watched as the sky and the land lightened by degrees. He watched the white band on the horizon deepen a delicate pink, then red, then gold. The guns roared once more before the last of the night was finally banished, but Garraty barely heard. The first red arc of sun was peering over the horizon, faded behind a fluff of cloud, then came again in an onslaught. It looked to be a perfect day, and Garraty greeted it only half-coherently by thinking: Thank God I can die in the daylight.

Such a creepy, haunting read!

Hot off the press, here’s the newest in Miranda Kenneally’s terrific YA series! I’ve already finished the book, and reviewed it here. I always like this author’s writing style, as well as her great plots. Here’s a little snippet that I enjoyed:

“Taylor Lukens, come forward,” the judge in dark robes said. It was like approaching Professor Dumbledore for breaking school rules at Hogwarts. Honestly, that would have seemed more normal than going before a judge for possession of drugs.

PS – That tag line on the cover — “Is he playing for love or playing her?” — has really nothing to do with the story, so don’t be turned off by it! Taylor is a strong female lead character, with brains and integrity. The tag line just puzzles me.

My book group is continuing with our slow and steady re-read of book #8 in the Outlander series, discussing two chapters per week (and with 145 chapters, as you can imagine, it’ll take us a while yet to get through it all!) Here’s a snippet from one of this week’s chapters that made me smile — a little exchange between a Quaker and a Scot/Mohawk who are soon to become brothers-in-law:

A certain tenseness in Denny’s shoulders relaxed. “Scouts are not required to kill the enemy, are they?”

“No, we’ve our choice about it,” Ian assured him, straight-faced. “We can kill them if we like — but just for the fun of it, ken. It doesna really count.”

Japanese Lover

I just finished reading Isabel Allende’s newest novel, published last year, and will write up my reaction in the next few days. Meanwhile, here’s a lovely little description of the power of young love:

At the age of twenty-two, suspecting their time was limited, Ichimei and she had gorged on love to enjoy it to the full, but the more they tried to exhaust it, the wilder their desire became, and whoever says that every flame must sooner or later be extinguished is wrong, because there are passions that blaze on until destiny destroys them with a swipe of its paw, and even then hot embers remain that need only a breath of oxygen to be rekindled.

Porcupine of Truth

Okay, the title all by itself makes me giggle. I’m not very far into the book, but already the writing is making me happy. Here’s the main character, about his mom:

My mom, a therapist slash school counselor, “hears” that I feel like she’s ripped me out of my normal summer, but “what she wants to say to me” is that I need to stop moping. And what better place to drop off a mopey seventeen-year-old boy in a strange new city than at the zoo? Had she just asked me where I wanted to go, I would have been like, I don’t know, a coffee shop. A movie theater. Any place a guy in his summer before senior year might want to hang. But whatever. My mom is down with the kids and how they all just want to stare at monkeys all day.

The authors of this new YA novel seem to be able to channel their inner teenagers:

In between moments of almost-paralyzing self-doubt, I looked in the mirror and thought, for about half a second, that I looked like the kind of person I might like to know if I didn’t know myself already.

Another little example:

I knew I would lose him if I said something.

I said something.

I lost him.

How can I blame him for that?

One more:

Hiding and denying and being afraid is no way to treat love. Love demands bravery. No matter the occasion, love expects us to rise.
