Why do none of the movies girls at my school love have happy endings? One half of the couple either dies or moves away. But they can’t get enough of those films. Titanic, Shakespeare in Love, Atonement, The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, every other Nicholas Sparks film known to man. My classmates want a relationship, yet they idolize movies where couples never wind up happy. I don’t get it.

Love is a funny thing, and once again I really don’t mean it’s amusing. I mean it’s odd. Strange. Weird.

There was a time not so long ago, because I can remember it, when Mum and Dad loved each other. It was obvious, in the things that they did, and the way that they were, and the way they called each other “honey.”

But I no longer believed that they did. It was obvious, in the things that they did, and the way that they were. And the way they called each other “honey.” In just the wrong tone of voice, through teeth held tight.

Now comes the darkening sky and a cold wind that passes right through you, as though you are not there, it passes through you as though it does not care whether you are alive or dead, for you will be gone and the wind will still be there, licking the grass flat upon the ground, not caring whether the soil is at a freeze or thaw, for it will freeze and thaw again, and soon your bones, now hot with blood and thick-juicy with marrow, will be dry and brittle and flake and freeze and thaw with the weight of the dirt upon you, and the last moisture of your body will be drawn up to the surface by the grass, and the wind will come and knock it down and push you back against the rocks, or it will scrape you up under its nails and take you out to sea in a wild screaming of snow.

This historical novel centering on a real-life murder in 19th century Iceland is atmospheric, chilling, and full of beautiful writing. My review will be along in the next few days!

Dying in his cellar and being eaten by rats was not enough punishment for Brabantio. For the first time I hoped that there was an afterlife, and he could look up through the sulfurous clouds of Hell to watch me unwind his plots, drain his power, and extinguish the light of his legacy.

Intense, right? On a lighter note:

“Cry havoc, and let slip the trousers of most outrageous bonkilation!” said the queen, throwing off the sash of her gown and stepping out of it. “Off with your kit, fool!”
