After devouring every book in the Thursday Murder Club series, how could I possibly resist checking out Richard Osman’s newest series starter?

We Solve Murders retains the sense of hijinks and emphasis on quirky characters that make the Thursday Murder Club books such incredible fun. Here, the main characters are Amy Wheeler, a tough-as-nails bodyguard who excels at protecting the people under her charge and hitting the people who threaten them, and Steve Wheeler, her widowed father-in-law who seems to want nothing more than a quiet life in his little British village — with the weekly pub quiz thrown in for excitement.

Amy’s current job is protecting Rosie D’Antonio, the world’s #2 bestselling mystery writer, a woman of indeterminate age with audacious style and more money than she knows what to do with. Rosie got on the bad side of a Russian oligarch by putting him in one of her books, and now her life is at risk, so she and Amy are tucked away on Rosie’s private island, where they should be safe.

Unfortunately, bizarre deaths seem to be occurring amongst the clients of Amy’s employer, and the pattern of these murders is uncomfortably close to Amy’s recent locations. As more threats loom, Amy and Rosie go on the run, and Amy convinces Steve to join them as they race around the globe, outwitting the bad guys and staying one step ahead of the seemingly endless parade of people trying to kill them.

As with Richard Osman’s other books, the characters themselves are even more entertaining than the heist/chase/murder/mystery plot elements. Amy and Steve’s dynamic is especially wonderful, and Rosie is a delicious mix of sassy and bawdy, always up for an adventure and not at all shy about her own success. A delightful cast of supporting characters rounds out the story — including an arrogant action hero actor, a charming airport security agent, Steve’s local mechanic friend, and many more.

The mystery in We Solve Murders is convoluted and a bit mad, and goes in all sorts of strange and unexpected directions. International flights on private jets, as seen through Steve’s experiences, are a hoot, and it’s quite fun to follow the trio from destination to destination in search of clues and safety.

We Solve Murders feels like a great start to a series, and I’m looking forward to seeing what hot water Amy, Steve, and Rosie find themselves in next.

Book #2, We Chase Shadows, will be released in September 2026 — and you can bet that I’ll be reading it just as soon as I can!
