Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, featuring a different top 10 theme each week. This week’s topic is a freebie, meaning we all pick whatever topic we feel like writing about.
I’m going to focus on series that I’ve at least started, or read a few books from, but haven’t finished. Some of these I intend to get back to, and some I likely never will. If you’ve read any of these and think I should commit to moving forward, please let me know!
My top 10 are:

The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey
Books I’ve read: #1 – 5
Books remaining: 4
Will I continue? Absolutely. I love these books — but they’re so big and involved that I need time in between volumes.

The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski
Books I’ve read: I’ve gotten through 4
Books remaining: 4 more
Will I continue? Maybe. I’ve lost a little steam, and I’m kind of far ahead of the Netflix series. I’ll probably hold off for a while and then see if I feel like getting back into the books.

Cormoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling)
Books I’ve read: #1 – 4
Books remaining: One more so far
Will I continue? I’d say no. I’m so turned off by JKR at this point that I no longer want to buy new books or support her. (Although as a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I can’t say I won’t be spending money on her works at all… inconsistent, I know, but there you have it.)

Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
Books I’ve read: #1 – 3
Books remaining: 3
Will I continue? Probably not. I really enjoyed the first three books, but there was a satisfying ending to the original trilogy, and I haven’t felt the need to continue. But feel free to try to convince me otherwise!

Discworld by Terry Pratchett
Books I’ve read: #1 – 4
Books remaining: Thousands. (Actually, depending how you count, I think it’s 37, but it’s hard to say how many books are in the main series vs related spin-offs. I think.)
Will I continue? Maybe… ??? I started with the grand idea of reading one book per month, in release order, but only stuck with it for 4 months. People warned me not to go chronologically, but did I listen? I may dip back into the Discworld books, but not any time soon.

All Souls series by Deborah Harkness
Books I’ve read: #1 – 3
Books remaining: One (so far)
Will I continue? Yes. I loved the original trilogy, and I have a copy of the 4th book, Time’s Convert. The only reason I haven’t read it yet is that I think I’d need a major refresher on the original books before I read it. Maybe once the TV series airs its 3rd season, I’ll feel more prepared.

Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan
Books I’ve read: #1 – 4
Books remaining: 2
Will I continue? It’s possible — but I’d have to start over again at the beginning if I were going to have any hope of following the story. I did like the volumes I read, so maybe eventually.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
Books I’ve read: #1 – 4
Books remaining: 1 novel and 1 novella, so far, more to follow
Will I continue? Yes. I really do want to read more Murderbot! Just haven’t made time yet.

Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
Books I’ve read: #1 – 2
Books remaining: 14 so far
Will I continue? Unlikely. I enjoyed the first book, wasn’t as gripped by the second, and don’t feel much of a need to continue.

The Poldark Saga by Winston Graham
Books I’ve read: #1 – 7
Books remaining: 5
Will I continue? Possibly. I enjoyed them all so far, but in conjunction with watching the TV series. Now that the show has wrapped up, I have less incentive to keep going with the books, which move beyond the events covered by the show.
Have you read any of these series? And if so, which do you think I should make a priority to continue?

I had a similar reaction to the Discworld series.

I had such high hopes when I started it!
I’m interested in the Poldark novels, but they’re long and there are a lot of them, so I need to finish up some other series before I start on those.
They are long, and it took me a bit to adjust to the author’s writing style — but the story really is good and so immersive. (It helps that I watched the first season of Poldark before starting the first book, so I had very pretty images of all the characters in my head 🙂 )
I watched the first couple of episodes before my PBS streaming service glitches and wouldn’t let me watch it on my TV. But I liked what I saw. I’m just really bad about keeping up on TV shows.
I agree with you about Mss Peregrine’s series; it ended really well after the third book, but I decided to continue and I was blown away with how good the last 3 books were. I really like where Jacob went as a character. He started off as a whiney teen but grew into a matured young adult.
Oh, that’s really good to know! I do have the 4th book, but just never got around to starting it and then lost interest. It sounds like you’d recommend continuing!
I would! This series was a solid 4 star read for me 😃
Maisie Dobbs–I’m with ya. Ditto Poldark. Good post!
Thanks! I really expected to love Maisie Dobbs, and I did really like the first book.
I actually confused Maisie with Maggie Hope of Mr Churchill’s Secretary! I gave up when they sanitized his famous phrase of KBO
I could make a really long list with this topic😁 Most often what happens is I just don’t love a book enough to continue the series, so I dont.
Well, that happens a lot for me too! Lately, too, I’ve been reluctant to start open-ended series because I already have enough that I’m waiting for, and I don’t need yet more plotlines to keep up with from book to book, especially when the wait between books stretches on for years.
I love a good series! I felt meh about the Maise Dobbs series book one so I haven’t continued with the author. Happy reading!
Thanks, you too!
I also really should continue with Leviathan Wakes and All Systems Red! I only have the last book of the Witcher to go, which I´m planning to read next month!
Ah, you’re much farther along than I am! I have a friend who recently finished all the Witcher books and she’s been urging me to continue — maybe I will after watching the next Netflix season.
I’m in the same situation with the Galbraith books. I want to read Troubled Blood because I have enjoyed the series so far. But I’m not sure I can support the author any longer.

It’s frustrating for sure. I’m not so certain I’d read the next book anyway, since I have some issues with the writing overall, but probably if it was a different author, I’d be going ahead.
Aww, I hope you come on back to the Discworld. I totally understand, though. I think if I started with the first book I wouldn’t have kept going.
Everyone said that was a mistake, and they were right! Are there any books within Discworld that you especially recommend?
I really enjoy the Witches subseries. I think you’ve already read the first one, Equal Rites. Wyrd Sisters is next and it’s good, but I love the third one the most, Witches Abroad.
Do I need to go in order (read Wyrd Sisters next?), or do they make sense individually? Thanks for the help!
No prob! 🙂
I don’t think you need to, but I think it would be helpful if you did because you get a better sense of how the characters, mainly the witches, relate to each other and why certain disagreements arise. Wyrd Sisters was good too but I just had more fun reading Witches Abroad.
I didn’t read the Galbrath books, but my husband liked them, but never got around to finish the last one which was HUGE. (Once again, editors afraid to do what they should because the author is famous, I think.) However, I loved the TV series and I’d watch more if they make more. As for Maisie Dobbs… I wasn’t impressed with the first one so I never bothered with any others. I have three posts on my blog about series I never finished, so you’re not alone with these!
Well, yes, I agree that the Galbraith books could use some more trimming and editing! The TV series was very good — I really liked the lead actors.
