Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, featuring a different top 10 theme each week. This week’s topic is Characters I’d Name a Pet After, but I thought I’d switch it up a bit and focus instead on great doggos and kitties in fiction.
Who doesn’t love a good animal story? Here are some of the very good dogs and cats of my recent reading:
Favorite dogs:
1. Rollo (Outlander by Diana Gabaldon)
2. Mutt (Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow)
3. Mouse (Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
4. Jess (A Boy & His Dog at the End of the World by C. A. Fletcher)
5 & 6. Little Ann & Old Dan (Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls)
7. Bongo (The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher)
And a few cool cats too:
8. Adso (Outlander by Diana Gabaldon)
9. Medea (Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs)
10 & 11. (because they’re a pair, and I can’t exclude either one!) Cagney & Lacey (Toby Daye series by Seanan McGuire)
What great dogs and cats of fiction can you think of?

Great list! TV Rollo and Adso are so cute. ❤ Yet another reason for me to get around to watching Outlander…
Not that I’m going just by looks… but the people in the show are just as attractive (although maybe less cuddly) than the animals!
Cagney and Lacey would be great names for a pair of kitties. https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2020/11/ttt-111720.html
Definitely! They’re quite the twosome in the books I’ve read.
Great list!
My post!
Thanks! Always fun to try to figure out how to make the topic work. 🙂
Bongo is a great pick.
My post.
If I ever get a dog, I’d love to name it Bongo!
I like your take on the topic. I haven’t watched/read any of these but that cat looks like the sweetest thing ever.
The kittie is so, so precious!
Rollo and Medea are so great! Loved them too! And if you haven’t read it yet “Oberon” from the Iron Druid Chronicles. One of the best ever! ❤
Thanks for the recommendation!
Cagney & Lacey! I love that! So funny!
It’s pretty adorable. 🙂
Terry Crews’ character in ‘Brooklyn 9-9’ named his daughters that too. I’d like to read some more of Seanan McGuire’s books because I love her ‘Wayward Children’ series.
She’s such a favorite of mine. You really can’t go wrong with any of her books!
This is such a fun list! Though funny enough, I’m not sure I’ve read a single one of these books. Looks like I need to expand my literary menagerie.
Ha, I like the idea of a literary menagerie!
Great list! A few of my recent favorite fictional animals are S.T. in ‘Hollow Kingdom’ (anthropomorphic crow) and the main character’s albino pug (‘Good Boy’) in ‘Snapdragon.’ 🙂
I love ST! Hollow Kingdom was a great book.
