Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, featuring a different top 10 theme each week. This week’s topic is Favorite Book Quotes.
My focus this time around is quotes about reading. Here are some quotes I love:
“The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.”
– Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey
“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.”
– Lemony Snicket, Horseradish
“… a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.”
– George R. R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
“She is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain.”
– Louisa May Alcott, Work: A Story of Experience
“A library is infinity under a roof.”
– Gail Carson Levine
“Despite his money and his looks and all the good-on-paper attributes he possessed, he was not a reader, and well, let’s just say that is the sort of nonsense up with which we will not put.”
– Eleanor Brown, The Weird Sisters
“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”
– Philip Pullman
“Reading one book is like eating one potato chip.”
– Diane Duane, So You Want to Be a Wizard
“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.”
“Make it a rule never to give a child a book you would not read yourself.”

I love that Lemony Snicket quote. It’s been mentioned on a few different sites this week!
My post .
It definitely rings true for me. 🙂
I love the ‘one book, one potato chip’ quote – I’ve used it before myself!

It’s a good one!
These are all wonderful! And some beautiful classics too! 😄
Jane Austen can always be counted on. 🙂
Great list! Ilove the one from CS Lewis!
It was hard to choose just one from C. S. Lewis! He has quite a few about reading and books that are really memorable.
Best Library Quote Ever: “A Library should be full of exclamations! Shouts of delights and horror as the wonders of the world are discovered or the lies of the heavens uncovered or the wild adventures of devil-knows-who sent romping out of the pages.”… “A Library should not shush; it should roar!” -Catherynne M. Valente
I love those, especially about not shushing but roaring. 🙂
Ahhh I love quotes about books and libraries, as I myself struggle to put my love for books into words…that image had me in splits though😂
The images make me happy. 🙂 So much truth!
I love all of these quotes! So witty and thought-provoking.

Well done! Possibly the best list today!
That’s so sweet! Thank you.
Ah, some classics there! I do always genuinely feel sceptical about people who haven’t brought a book… they must not be my kind of people!
I feel the same way. Or when people tell me it’s been a few months since they read a book???
These are great, a nice twist on the theme today. Love that last one!
Words to live by! 🙂
Oooohh, these are all so so so lovelyyyyy……. 😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks! It was a fun list to put together this week.
Brilliant quotes!! I love the Game Of Thrones one, it’s such a great book you could have picked so many haha. I tried this TTT, but ended up turning it into a game guessing which book the quotes were from. See you get on!! 🙂 https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2020/09/29/top-ten-tuesday-guess-the-books-for-my-favourite-quotes/
Thanks for your link! I agree, Game of Thrones is super quotable. 🙂
I’m so happy to see a Weird Sisters quote on your list! I adore that book, and that quote in particular. I actually picked up my copy the other day for the first time in years and started reading random section. Just gorgeous writing.
It really is such a great book! It’s been years since I read it, so I should probably pick it up again too. 🙂
