Welcome to Shelf Control — an original feature created and hosted by Bookshelf Fantasies.
Shelf Control is a weekly celebration of the unread books on our shelves. Pick a book you own but haven’t read, write a post about it (suggestions: include what it’s about, why you want to read it, and when you got it), and link up! Fore more info on what Shelf Control is all about, check out my introductory post, here.
Want to join in? Shelf Control posts go up every Wednesday. See the guidelines at the bottom of the post, and jump on board!
My Shelf Control pick this week is:
Title: My Lady Jane
Author: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
Published: 2016
Length: 491 pages
What it’s about (synopsis via Goodreads):
The comical, fantastical, romantical, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey. In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.
At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane is about to become the Queen of England.
How I got it:
Downloaded the Kindle version from Amazon.
When I got it:
Last summer.
Why I want to read it:
Well… I was attracted to this book once I heard it was about Lady Jane Grey… although I admit that I’m skeptical about Lady Jane being the subject of anything that could be considered comical. Still, people I know and trust have recommended it, so I’ll attempt to put my doubts aside and give it a fair try.

This book is hilarious. I was very hesitant when I started reading it – I had no idea what it was about, I just read the title and thought it was a historical YA (and it sort of is) – but once I got into the story, I LOVED it. Gave it 5 stars.
The book is very self-aware of how ridiculous (and amazing) it is, so keep that in mind when you’re reading it. 😀
Thanks for the input — it reassures me a bit about the subject!
I love seeing what’s on your shelf, Lisa! It’s fun to read your reasons for choosing books!
Thank you!
I didn’t think I was going to like My Lady Jane either, but it was actually a really fun read. I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks – I’m so glad to know you liked it!
I’m a bit on the fence about this one too — although I’ve heard the audiobook is fantastic so I might go that route.
That’s a good idea! Maybe I’ll consider it as well.
