Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, featuring a different top 10 theme each week. This week’s topic is another freebie, so I thought I’d dig into my history as a reader and focus on the 10 books that represent various reading firsts for me.
1) My first romance novel: The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss
2) My first classic that I read just for “fun”: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
3) The first poetry book I ever bought: Circles on the Water by Marge Piercy
4) The first Shakespeare play I ever read: Romeo and Juliet
5) The first history book I read that wasn’t for school: Vietnam by Stanley Karnow
6) The first book my husband ever told me about: Letters from Thailand by Botan (and check out our bookish romance, here)
7) The first book series I read out loud in its entirety: Harry Potter, which I read to my son a couple of years ago, over the span of 10 months
8) The first book that introduced me to the Scottish Highlands: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon (hey, it’s been at least a few weeks since I’ve mentioned Outlander in a blog post, so I’m overdue)
9) The first book I read twice in a row: The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
10) The first vampire book that made me swoon: Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice

Wow to number 8! ❤
LOL. That’s not my whole Outlander collection by this point… it just keeps expanding!
😀 😀 😀
What a great topic! I think it’s so wonderful you read Harry Potter out loud to your son.
It was such a fantastic experience for both of us! It was so cute to see him get really involved with the story, and such an amazing reading time for us both.
Ahh I love your Outlander collection! I really need to read on, I’ve only read the first two. They’re just so long!

Long, but amazing! 🙂 Definitely worth it!
I love your topic. I too like to mention Outlander whenever I feel it related to anything I’m blogging about. It;s just so good. I really need to read Voyager.

My Top 10
And isn’t Outlander related to just about anything? 🙂 Voyager is amazing! I hope you get to it soon.
You’re Outlander shelf looks an awful lot like mine. 😀
You can never have too many copies of Outlander!
That’s my motto, too!
THIS IS SUCH A FUN topic, Lisa. Really neat idea. I don’t know if I could remember about of the genre firsts I read/adventured with, but the idea is cool. 🙂
Thanks so much! It was pretty fun to put together. 🙂
Reading aloud is such a wonderful family activity, I really wish more people realised that everyone can enjoy and benefit from being read to, not just the littlest ones!
I agree! I read with both my kids way past the age when they could read on their own. There’s something really wonderful about sharing those moments.
Romeo and Juliet was my first Shakespeare as well. 🙂

For me, it was in 9th grade English class!
I love this post although I’m not sure if I remember a few of your firsts! My first romance was a vampire romance, Forever and the Night by Linda Lael Miller. I LOVED those and just recently found them and am convincing myself a re-read is definitely in order. lol
I can relate — now that I’m thinking about some of my firsts, I’m tempted to dig up copies and re-read. I can only imagine how horrified grown-up me would be if I reencountered my first romance novel now. I was 13 or 14 when I read, and I thought it was just so racy and daring… my feminist brain would probably recoil in horror. 🙂
