Welcome to the newest weekly feature here at Bookshelf Fantasies… Shelf Control!
Shelf Control is all about the books we want to read — and already own! Consider this a variation of a Wishing & Waiting post… but looking at books already available, and in most cases, sitting right there on our shelves and e-readers.
Want to join in? See the guidelines and linky at the bottom of the post, and jump on board! Let’s take control of our shelves!
My Shelf Control pick this week is:
Title: Anne of Green Gables
Author: L. M. Montgomery
Published: 1908
Length: 390 pages
What it’s about (synopsis via Goodreads):
As soon as Anne Shirley arrived at the snug, white farmhouse called Green Gables, she knew she wanted to stay forever… but would the Cuthberts send her back to the orphanage? Anne knows she’s not what they expected — a skinny girl with decidedly red hair and a temper to match. If only she could convince them to let her stay, she’d try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes or blurt out the very first thing she had to say. Anne was not like anybody else, everyone at Green Gables agreed; she was special — a girl with an enormous imagination. This orphan girl dreamed of the day when she could call herself Anne of Green Gables.
How I got it:
I bought it as an adult…
When I got it:
… several years ago…
Why I want to read it:
… because I could no longer bear the stigma of being the only person on the planet who hasn’t read the book! I know this is a childhood favorite for so many people. I’m not quite sure how I missed these books as a kid, but I think it’s about time that I find out for myself what makes these books so special!

I know I read this years ago, but I don’t remember it very well. I have it on a shelf somewhere, and one day I’ll get around to re reading it 😛
I have a bunch of books from my childhood that I remember loving, but don’t remember many details. Rereading would be lots of fun!
You aren’t the last person – I haven’t read the series either! I’ve been working through some children’s classics over the past couple of years and this is up there on the list. I’m currently reading a children’s classic of my own – The Chronicles of Narnia. Now, I may just well be the only person who hasn’t read that series!
I hope you enjoy!
I think I was second to last with Narnia! I finally read the series with my son a couple of years ago! I’m looking forward to Anne — it seems like a really formative book experience for so many people!
What a great idea! I’m definitely doing this… as soon as I finish the books I’m currently supposed to be reading.
Great! I’d love to see what you pick!
I definitely fall into the camp of Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite childhood classics. I just love her character, her story, and her growth. The movie is also just lovely 🙂 Hope you get to it soon!
Thank you! It’s wonderful to hear how much you love this book! I’m really going to make an effort to finally dedicate time to it. Have you read the entire series?
You’re welcome. And yes I have! I haven’t read the others in a long while. The original is probably my favorite 🙂 Although, I love getting more of the Gilbert/Anne romance later!
You’re not the last person! I’ve seen the Anne books so much lately that I just had to investigate further. I treated myself to a really pretty set and hope to read them for The Classics Club soon. I feel very under-read in the children’s classics and would love to remedy that 🙂
A great bonus of becoming a mom is having a built-in excuse to read and re-visit children’s books, including classics!
I’ve never read this classic either! It’s one that I should check out eventually. It’s always interested me a lot because so many people really love it.
I’m really looking forward to giving it a try!
Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful story. I loved it growing up. And I loved the movies, too. I would always borrow them from the library just about every other time I went haha.
That’s awesome! I constantly see people mentioning how much these books meant to them, and I think it’s about time that I catch up!
I love L. M. Montgomery so much! I hope you get to experience her magic soon!
Thank you! I really need to carve out time for this one and stick to it!
For years I used to borrow this book (and the rest in the series) almost on rotation from the library – I do hope you love it when you manage to get it off your shelf!
I’m really looking forward to it. Thanks!
I have to read this too! Can’t believe I missed it as a girl!
No matter how well read I think I am, I’m always realizing that there’s something important that I’ve missed!
