Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR List

fireworks2Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, featuring a different top 10 theme each week.

This week’s theme is Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR List. My to-be-read list is out of control right now. I keep buying books, and I keep requesting ARCs, and then they all just sit there, practically mocking me, clamoring to be read RIGHT NOW! Sigh. Narrowing it down to just ten is hard, but here are the top 10 books that I swear — really, I swear! — I’m going to make time for this fall:

New releases:

 1) Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

2) Shadows by Robin McKinley

3) The Abominable by Dan Simmons

4) Just One Year by Gayle Forman

5) Dangerous Women edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois (includes “Virgins”, a new novella by Diana Gabaldon)

Books that I own, but still need to read:

6) The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

7) Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick

8) The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley

9) Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein

10) Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

This is just the tip of the iceberg… and I’m conveniently ignoring all the Kindle books that I haven’t started yet. So many books, so little time…

Do we have any TBR books in common? What are you dying to read this fall?

  1. Great choices. I’m reading Code Name Verity soon so I’m interested to see what you make of Rose Under Fire. I’ve heard good things about both books!

    • I loved Code Name Verity (make sure you have plenty o’ kleenex on hand…). Let me know what you think once you read it! I’m really looking forward to Rose Under Fire.

  2. The Golem and the Jinni! *high fives* I got it last summer but hadn’t gotten around to reading it; hopefully I’ll be able to squeeze it in between ARCs xP I want to read Life After Life but I’m going to wait for it on paperback; it looks like the type of book I’d rather have as a physical copy 🙂

Oooh, right,Dangerous Women is coming out soon? Nice, I’m actually quite curious about that anthology, they collected a good number of authors for it 🙂

    • Argh, I have to stop buying books and then not reading them! I’ve had Golem & Jinni for months now, and I really, really, really want to read it… I think I’ve been avoiding my hardcovers recently (too much reading on the go, I guess). Same for Life After Life — I was sure I wanted to read it the second it came out… and it’s still sitting on my shelf. I’m buying Dangerous Women especially for the Gabaldon story, but I’ll be excited for the stories by Jim Butcher, GRRM, Lev Grossman — so many great ones!

  3. After reading your list, I’m going to add Shadow and Just One Year to my list.
I’ve stared on The Golem and the Jinni but have yet to finish. But so far, so good!
I’ve heard good things about Life After Life so I’m adding to my TBR list too.

Thanks for sharing your list with us!

    • My pleasure! These lists are so much fun. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying The Golem & the Jinni — I’ve only heard good things about it! Thanks for stopping by!

    • OMG (squealing), one week until Doctor Sleep! I’m trying to make sure I’ll be ready to start it the second it arrives. I wonder how long it is? (checking… ) OK, 544 pages. Next week is going to be fun!

  4. I’m so freaking excited for Doctor Sleep. I have it coming on audio since I listened to The Shining on audio as well, figured I’d stick with that. Also cannot wait for Dangerous Women. Anthologies usually only interest me with a few of their stories but I’m legit excited for almost all of them. It’s HUGE too!
Rose Under Fire… *sniff* And Life After Life is amazing. Both WWII type stories so you might want to space those two apart unless you’re like me and like to play games with your brain and read multiple books with similar topics. Fun! lol

    • Oh, yay, so glad you enjoyed (with tears) Rose Under Fire and Life After Life. If I can actually get to all of the books on my list this fall, I’ll be so happy! And — oh, boy! — Dangerous Women and Doctor Sleep! I hope my family realizes how little they’ll be seeing of me in the next few months.:)

  5. Okay, I totally want to read Doctor Sleep, but I’ve never actually read The Shining; just seen the film. I kind of think I ought to read the book before reading it’s sequel. Thoughts?

BTW, I’m having a virtual launch party for the release of new book Quantum Entanglement on the Interchron Series FB page today (www.facebook.com/interchronseries). It will be going on between 2pm and 7pm MST. There will be fun pics, goofy quizzes, and lots of prizes. So if you have the time, stop by. You might win a free copy of the book or an Amazon Giftcard!

    • Liesel, I’d say definitely read The Shining first. You won’t be sorry! The book is very different from the movie (and in my opinion, much better). Thanks for the launch party info!

    • Thanks, Ula! I couldn’t wait to buy it, and then have been too busy to settle down and read it. Plus, mine is a hardcover in really beautiful condition, and I’ve been traveling a lot this summer… need to curl up on my couch and start reading it!

  6. Oh man, I SO understand that TBR pile! I have HUNDREDS I’m DYING to read, so how does a person pick ten? I have to give you kudos for pulling it off, even if it is just the tip of the iceberg. Just One Year- I’m SO all over that one!

    • I know, it’s kind of impossible to pick from all the unread books all over my house… but I guess this batch is the 10 I feel most strongly about — today, anyway! 🙂 Don’t hold me to it, though!

  7. I just finished Rose Under Fire this morning (it was my most highly anticipated fall read <3). Just One Year also made my list. And though it's not on my fall TBR, I hope I get a chance to read The Golem and the Jinni soon. Great list. 🙂

    • I’m TERRIBLE at short stories — but every once in a while, especially for the sake of authors I love, I’ll give them a try. But honestly, it’s usually a big effort for me, and I always end up feeling like I’d rather be reading a big fat novel. 🙂 The Coldest Girl in Coldtown just had a Kindle price drop, so I snapped it up… and now have to find time to read it!

  8. Yes to McKinley’s Shadows! Also made my list. I am 3/4 of the way through Rose Under Fire and it’s so good. Not sure if I love it quite as much as Code Name Verity, but it’s a worthy companion novel. I need to read Life after Life as well, and Midwinterblood. Great picks! I hope you’re able to start reading them soon!
