This week’s Thursday Quotable:

I sigh involuntarily when the first wave brushes around my feet, soothing the pain. Another step, another, and with each one I feel better — like I was sick and I’m being healed. When I get thigh-deep, an especially large wave crashes in front of me. It almost knocks me backward, sweeps me back to the shore, but then it’s perfect, it’s beautiful, it holds me like it loves me. I fall forward, and the water envelops me, swirls my hair around me like a blanket. There’s no pain. There’s nothing but simplicity, nothing but beauty as I slip away from the shore and dive deep, deep into the ocean, into the silence, into the cool water and the smooth sand that coats the ocean floor.

Aliens are stupid.

I’m not talking about real aliens. The Others aren’t stupid. The Others are so far ahead of us, it’s like comparing the dumbest human to the smartest dog. No contest.

No, I’m talking about the aliens inside our own heads.

The ones we made up, the ones we’ve been making up since we realized those glittering lights in the sky were suns like ours and probably had planets like ours spinning around them. You know, the aliens we imagine, the kind of aliens we’d like to attack us, human aliens. You’ve seen them a million times. They swoop down from the sky in their flying saucers to level New York and Tokyo and London, or they march across the countryside in huge machines that look like mechanical spiders, ray guns blasting away, and always, always, humanity sets aside its differences and bands together to defeat the alien horde. From a truly creepy, disturbing, and un-put-down-able book, I picked two non-creepy quotes — both appealing to me as a book lover.

This week’s Thursday Quotables:

The room on the other side of the iron door was ten degrees cooler than the parkland outside. Vic smelled the vast vault filled with books before she saw it, because her eyes required time to adjust to the cavernous dark. I’m cheating a bit this week. I just couldn’t make up my mind whether to go with a snarky quote or a more serious (and lovely) descriptive passage. So… why choose? This week, I’m going with two Thursday Quotables.

Here’s Quotable #1:

The cop clears his throat. “Please state what happened.” He looks me up and down; his eyes linger on my forehead (which is throbbing in pain, thank you very much) and — yep, there it is — he glances at my boobs, like he doesn’t mean to but he can’t help it. Dudes think they’re completely 007 about the boob eye-flick, but I can always tell. It’s a a gift.

Introducing… Thursday Quotables!

If you’re like me, you probably find yourself annoying friends and family by reading random quotes out loud. Or do you chuckle to yourself in relative silence, then insert millions of scraps of paper in your books every time you find a passage that you love? Or maybe you go the high-tech route and highlight the heck out of your Kindle books. Whichever way you go about it, you know you’re just dying to share the good stuff with other people who love books.
