Dearly beloved,
We are gathered here today to mark the passing of a true friend, a source of companionship and countless happy memories, a constant presence who has enriched my life on a daily basis during all of our many years together.
Please join me in mourning the passing… of my Kindle Oasis.
I bought my Oasis in November of 2017, and it’s been wonderful. I loved the display quality, the size, the weight, the ease of use. A nice uncluttered look, easy to hold, highly portable.
Alas, it’s now being laid to rest.
It’s really all my fault. I was trying to continue reading while carrying other things from room to room, and it slipped and fell on the tile floor of my kitchen — with the cover open. I’m usually so careful! The poor Kindle landed face down, and I heard the crack as soon as it happened.
And here’s the result:

No one, apparently, fixes Kindle screens, and Amazon doesn’t offer repairs. The only choice is to live with it, which isn’t a long-term solution (it’s not only got cracks all across the reading surface, but it’s a little splintery too), or replace it.
Guess which I’m opting for?
Sadly, Amazon no longer sells the Kindle Oasis. Sigh. So I’m ordering myself a new Paperwhite, and it’ll be here later this week.
On the plus side, they do have a trade-in program. I get a whopping $5 gift card for sending back my Oasis, but the more valuable feature is a 20% discount on the new device. Between that, a gift card that I’ve been holding on to, and my credit card points, my total purchase price for a the Paperwhite Signature bundle (which includes a fabric case and wireless charging dock) comes to under $100. So I don’t feel too terrible about that.
My new Kindle will arrive by the weekend, and it will be time to send off my Oasis.
Cheers to you, my beloved Oasis! We’ve really had a good run.

Aww that is so sad! I remember when my Kindle Fire that I bought in 2012 or 2013 died, I was heartbroken. And the new Fires weren’t the same so now I have…an Oasis! I will be very careful with it. And I’d love to know what you think of the Paperwhite 😁
Two people in my family have Paperwhites and love them — and I guess I really don’t have another option, if I want to stick with an e-reader rather than a tablet (which I do). I hope your Oasis stays healthy for a long time!
Ooof! I am so sorry for your loss. It is always hard when you have to replace a beloved device. I had to replace Kindle 1.0 and was devastated. Of course I am now used to the new one. I love to switch between the Kindle and my phone for reading. The ease of reading with those devices is better for my eyes and so I rarely read physical books anymore (which is sad in its own way). May you and your new Kindle have long years of love and affection.

Thank you! I feel the same as you — I prefer reading on my Kindle (and switching to my phone on the go or just when it’s more convenient) to reading print books these days. And yes, that is sad in many ways — but I can’t deny that the lighting, adjustable font sizes, and search/highlight features make it a better reading experience in so many ways!
Ugh! 😩 but…happy new device!
Thank you! I would have been happy sticking with my Oasis forever… but I suppose 8 years is a pretty good record!
It’s never really occurred to me before – but that’s kind of weird that nowhere offers Kindle repairs. I mean, I get that it enable Amazon to make more money, but when you consider that you can get new screens for phones and tablets…
I agree! I think the issue is the cost — I called and messaged a bunch of places that do device (phone/tablet repairs). Most said they didn’t do Kindles, and one stated that they theoretically could, but the cost would be about the same as just getting a new one, so it wouldn’t be worth it. 😦
So sorry to hear that this happened! So hard to lose a longstanding device like this. Hope you wind up liking your new paperwhite!
Thank you! Yes, such a bummer. I never rush to upgrade just for the sake of an upgrade, and would have been perfectly happy sticking with my Oasis for years to come… but I guess it wasn’t meant to be!
Oh no!!!! I’m so sorry to hear about this! I hope you love your new Kindle just as much!
Thank you! I would have been perfectly happy to keep using my old Kindle forever… but I guess life had other plans for me!
I kind of know how you feel. I slammed mine in the car door and almost cracked it in half. That was the end of that. I have a Kindle Fire. Looking forward to what the Paperwhite is like. Sorry your sweet kindle is no more.
Thank you! Oh, how awful about your kindle and the car door! Those kind of moments are terrible — impossible to take back. I hope you’re enjoying your Kindle Fire!
You killed your Kindle? OY! Good thing you’ll have a new Paperwhite soon.
Oh no, I’m a Kindle killer! 🙂 I prefer to think of it as a tragic household accident. I’m still reading on my cracked screen, trying to avoid the sharp edges, and just waiting for the new one to arrive.
😂 Hope the new one comes soon!
That is so sad! I hate when favorite things die like that. I hope the adjustment to your new Kindle is an easy one. And maybe you’ll even end up liking it better? Here’s hoping!
I hope so! I did love my Oasis… but my husband already has a Paperwhite, and I think I’ll be happy enough with mine once it gets here. Thanks!
Aww, may that Kindle rest in peace.
But good to get a replacement for not too much dollars.
