Welcome back to Thursday Quotables! This weekly feature is the place to highlight a great quote, line, or passage discovered during your reading each week.ย Whether it’s something funny, startling, gut-wrenching, or just really beautifully written, Thursday Quotables is where my favorite lines of the week will be, and you’re invited to join in!
NEW! Thursday Quotables is now using a Linky tool! Be sure to add your link if you have a Thursday Quotables post to share.
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
(published 2008)
My son happens to be reading The Graveyard Book right now, and I keep peeking over his shoulder. The Graveyard Book has one of my very favorite opening lines:
There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife.
Just seeing the opening pages makes me realize I’m overdue for a re-read.
What lines made you laugh, cry, or gasp this week? Do tell!
If you’d like to participate in Thursday Quotables, it’s really simple:
- Write a Thursday Quotables post on your blog. Try to pick something from whatever you’re reading now. And please be sure to include a link back to Bookshelf Fantasies in your post (http://www.bookshelffantasies.com), if you’d be so kind!
- Click on the linky button (look for the cute froggie face) below to add your link.
- After you link up, I’d love it if you’d leave a comment about my quote for this week.
- Be sure to visit other linked blogs to view their Thursday Quotables, and have fun!
This book has been in my TBR list for quite some time now. It’s high time I read it.
Nice quote.
Thanks! I really love this book, and now that my son is reading it, it’s making me really impatient for a re-read. ๐

I haven’t read the Graveyard Book yet, but I read the short story that came out before that and absolutely loved it. It’s so sweet ๐
Which short story? Is it a part of The Graveyard Book?
No, it was a part of an anthology. I think it was the first chapter or a few of the fisrt chapters. Can’t remember the title and I don’t have the book at hand at th emoment.
Oh, the title of the Anthology mihgt have beeb “M is for magic”. Not sure.
Ah, okay. I don’t have that one, but I should track it down.
I love this book! Excellent choice for this time around.
Thanks! I love it too. ๐
Quite a strong quote – atmospheric and attention holding.
It’s stuck with me for years!
That first line really gives me the chills. I’ve never read Neil Gailman, but that quote really makes me want to give him a go!
