“I’m sure he didn’t get her any books,” said Lucy tightly.

“But he did,” said Fenella. “Everything from poetry to scientific treatises to philosophy and literature. Something new every single week, for eighteen years.”

“Really? I’m surprised he –”

“Just for the pleasure of keeping them where Minnie could see them. Where she could read their titles, but nothing more. Often, he would read a page or two aloud to her. He always knew what she’d find particularly involving or fascinating or moving. Then he’d stop at the best part, rip out that page, and burn it.”

Gene and Claudia tried for a while to assist me with the Wife Problem. Unfortunately, their approach was based on the traditional dating paradigm, which I had previously abandoned on the basis that the probability of success did not justify the effort and negative experience. I am thirty-nine years old, tall, fit, and intelligent, with a relatively high status and above-average income as an associate professor. Logically, I should be attractive to a wide range of women. In the animal kingdom, I would succeed in reproducing.

This week, I decided to highlight a few of the lighter moments in a truly creepy and disturbing book:

She was the kind of girl who would probably greet Godzilla while he was attacking downtown by asking whether he’d ever considered adopting a kitten to help him with his obvious stress disorder.

And:

“I hate it when you’re reasonable,” she grumbled. “You should be freaking out.”

“You’re freaking out enough for both of us,” I said. “I just want to know what I’m going to be freaking out about before I waste energy freaking out about the wrong things. Conservation of panic is important.”

One more:

My parents would be pissed if they came home and SymboGen had kicked the front door in, but I assumed they’d be even angrier if they came home and found me dead in the kitchen.

What a terrific start to a book about memories and mysteries. If the main character doesn’t know that she’s a smoker, what else doesn’t she know? These opening lines were enough to get me hooked.

I mean, yeah, I lost everything I ever worked for or cared about or believed in because of my condition, and I can’t ever just relax and enjoy life because the great-grandchildren of people I grew up idolizing are trying to hunt me down and kill me, and a woman I loved was killed because of me, and I sometimes feel this other thing scratching away at my consciousness, and I can’t tell if it’s trying to get in or trying to get out, which is a little unsettling, and according to the little voices that were beaten into me from an early age by strict Catholic monster hunters, I’m damned and going to hell, which can be a bit hard on my self-esteem to put it mildly. But it could be worse. So, yeah, I’m lucky, OK? I’m blessed. And by the way, shove it up your ass.

And one more:

My instinct was that she should find the son of a bitch right then and force the issue into the open, but my instinct was also to stab him immediately afterward, multiple times. I still had no idea how I was going to broach that topic with Sig. She didn’t drink wine, and even if she did, I didn’t know if red or white was appropriate for telling a woman that you want to kill her former lover. Do they have greeting cards for that sort of thing?

Thursday Quotables: Two Boys Kissing

If you are a teenager now, it is unlikely that you knew us well. We are your shadow uncles, your angel godfathers, your mother’s or your grandmother’s best friend from college, the author of that book you found in the gay section of the library. We are characters in a Tony Kushner play, or names on a quilt that rarely gets taken out anymore. We are the ghosts of the remaining older generation. You know some of our songs.

We do not want to haunt you too somberly. We don’t want our legacy to be gravitas. You wouldn’t want to live your life like that, and you won’t want to be remembered like that, either. Your mistake would be to find our commonality in our dying. The living part mattered more.
